Formed from the ashes of the beloved Sarah Records band the Field Mice, Northern Picture Library reunited the group's frontman Robert Wratten and keyboardist/vocalist Annemari Davies, who together pursued a more ambient, trip-hop-flavored aesthetic than in their former incarnation. After releasing a handful of tracks under the name Yesterday Sky, Wratten and Davies formed Northern Picture Library in 1993 after the addition of drummer and fellow Field Mice alum Mark Dobson, soon debuting with the EP Love Song for the Dead Che; the full-length Alaska followed that same year, and in early 1994 the trio returned with the EP Blue Dissolve. After one last single, "Paris," Northern Picture Library disbanded in the wake of Wratten and Davies' romantic fallout; the former resurfaced in 1996 with the LP Her Handwriting, a solo project issued under the name Trembling Blue Stars.

Northern Picture Library were formed by Bobby Wratten, Annemari Davies and Mark Dobson after The Field Mice split in 1991. NPL was a much less highly-strung project, less song-based and more dark and ambient than before, drawing influence from Talk Talk, Brian Eno and ambient/dance crossover. Melody maker described Alaska as “one of the debut albums of 1993” and the band as “state of the art, post-ambient electropoppers who write some of the most beautiful songs in existence.” This embarrassment of riches is completed by all three tracks from Love Song for the Dead Che, the companion ep recorded at the same sessions. Dead Che is a cover of the song originally recorded by the United States of America. “Pretty delightful”, according to Simon Reynolds in Melody Maker. Alaska runs for 72 minutes, features 18 remastered tracks, and the booklet contains detailed biographical notes. Stand-out tracks include: Lucky, Insecure and Isn’t It Time You Faced the Truth?. Career Precis: formed in suburban Mitcham in 1987, The Field Mice released seven singles and three albums on Sarah Records. The group split at the end of 1991 but are now recognised as genre-leaders. Chief songwriter Bobby then formed Northern Picture Library, who released an album and three singles between 1993 and 1994. Bobby currently fronts Trembling Blue Stars. Their 5th album The Seven Autumn Flowers was released in 2004 on Elefant.
