This mysterious elderly women, a remnant of times long past at the North Wollongong Hotel is famous for her ability to assume position at the bar on even the most out-of-control nights. Known only as "Maya" (often mispronounced as "Moir" or "Moira"), she is believed to have the power to grant wishes to those who shout her a middy of light.

Born in 1879, The North 'Gong Hotel was built by Theodore Bode who came from Hanover in Germany and was originally called The Royal Victoria Hotel.... probaly due to Queen Victorias German "roots".... apparently Victoria had a few sly ones of her own but thats another story....
The pub has had a few renovations and additions notably in 1933, 1955, 1998, and now in 2006. Some trivia.... The original building was about where the current back deck is and was built in the early part of last century after the original building was burnt to the ground and hence then the current building was built in the late 20's.... I think!!!
But regardless the date of it's original construction, The North Gong Hotel has remained the epicenter of Illawarra night life with it's warm and inviting hospitality and "yet to be out done" entertainment. Come to think of it, you name it... WE'VE GOT IT. From a quiet drink on a Monday, a little bit of Trivia on a Wednesday, hanging loose on a TGI Friday, Saturdays with DJ Hoppo mixing up soul, groove, all with a dash of party breaks... and finally bustin' out to the biggest named DJ's on North Gong's Sunday Sessions.
