Lähetä vastauksesi sähköpostilla 8. heinäkuuta mennessä osoitteeseen ..classicrock.festival@gmail.com....... Voittajille ilmoitetaan henkilökohtaisesti... ...... .. ..NORTH WILL RISE AGAIN.. .. .... It's hard to say when and where exactly a concept such as "Finnish Southern Rock" was initially coined. Perhaps it was 1988 and the Provinssirock festival, where famous musician, psychologist and latter-day politician "Veltto" Virtanen mixed up our very own Havana Black with the all-American Georgia Satellites: "Man, I wish we had bands that can play Southern rock so good in Finland, too!" .... Be that as it may, but once the early 80's rock-a-billy boom was fading, many of the genre's bands and musicians were adopting a somewhat harder approach to rock, with influences from the likes of Allman Brothers, Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat and ZZ Top getting rooted permanently into Finnish rock. And while Finnish groups like Bad Sign, Gringos Locos, Peer Günt, Melrose or Havana Black did not necessarily sound like their American peers, there was definitely a kindred spirit. Havana Black even got a shot at beating the Americans at their own game, as they were signed by Capitol Records and got to tour the States on a level back then undreamed of among Finnish rock bands. .... As it goes, the ultimate "big break" never came, but hard-edged rock had nonetheless come to Finland for keeps, transforming the land of a thousand lakes into a land of thousands of electric guitars... There is no remote one-horse town where hard rock or heavy metal wouldn't find its place, with bands after bands playing rough-edged rock music in all its countless forms. It is especially uplifting to witness such fashion-free music styles as Southern rock growing in popularity, as can be told by the foreign interest gained by Los Bastardos Finlandeses, among others. ....This compilation features an impressive array of Finnish bands that have drawn some of their inspiration from Southern rock music; the combination of our somber, Northern longing with the soulful groove of the South proves once again irresistible. Or as The Black League's Taneli Jarva aptly put it: Rock Is Rebellion - The North Will Rise Again! .... Pasi "El Pollo Loco" Kukkonen.. Lund, Sweden.. January 2010 ........ ..AIKKA HAKALA...... Alpo Antti Olavi "Aikka" Hakala a.k.a. Teddy Guitar is undoubtedly one of the godfathers of Finnish rock. He made his breakthrough in 1978 as singer/guitarist of Teddy & The Tigers, true legends and undisputed kings of Finnish rockabilly. In the aftermath of the rockabilly boom Aikka switched gears to high-octane pub rock and R'n'B with the short-lived but great Falcons and most notably Bad Sign, among other involvements. His solo material ranges from Skynyrdesque southern rock to more mellow introspection. In recents years Aikka has been sporadically perfoming solo gigs, but keep your eyes open for some more nostalgic Tigers re-union shows every once in a while!........ ..FREE RIDE...... Free Ride was founded in the year 2000, and from its inception it's meant ten years of the straight rock’n'roll. The line-up of the band has changed a few times during the years but the main idea has stayed the same; to play rock‘n'roll as it should be played - Loud and Mean! After a few demos and mini cd:s the debute album Outlaw Stories was released in the spring 2008 and got pretty good reviews and airplay at home and abroad. Now the band is ready for new challenges and the power-trio is planning to release their second album during 2010. So stay tuned if you enjoy the spirit of real rock’n'roll! ........ ..GANGSTER OF LOVE...... Conceived in 2005, The Gangsters' smokin’ hot, explosive concoction of rock, blues and rockabilly takes no prisoners and leaves scorched fans in their wake. Lead singer and guitarist Hank Barnfellow’s deep, wailing voice and soulful guitar smacks of Texas blues-rock legend Stevie Ray Vaughan and their countrified rockabillly twang could've come straight from the moonshine-filled bluegrass hills of Kentucky, instead of our very own town of Turku, Finland. They may leave you wondering whether you’ve been kissed or pistol whipped, but fear not, law abiding cyber-folks, you’re sure to be blown away by the Gangster of Love. ........ ..GREEDY PIG...... Hello good looking women, punks and boogie drillers! We're talking 'bout straight-ahead rock'n'roll! This ain't phony, this ain't wimpy. This is raw, hard and loud! Greedy pig was put together in southern Lapland in the mid 80's. The band..s musical interests, style and attitude were obvious from the very beginning; to play raw, uncompromising southern style boogie rock..n..roll with nasty harmonica and bottleneck guitar. After a few singles (87-89) Greedy Pig released the debut album Rye Rye Man and later its follow-up Junkfood. The band was also honored to tour Finland with the late, great, legendary Mick Green during the Spring 1999 playing all the famous Pirates classics as The Mick Green Band. Greedy Pig is currently working on a new album, from which these two songs of "hard 'n' loud boogie drilling" are appetizers of. And the pigsty looks and sounds dirtier than ever......... ..HAVANA BLACK...... Havana Black is a genuine work horse in the field of Finnish hard rock. Formed in 1984, the band has since been spreading the gospel of soulful power rock in the vein of Free, Zeppelin and Cream - not to forget the ever-present undertones and southern influences of bands like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. With their unique albums and energetic live shows Havana Black have gained a legendary, totemic status both in Finland and abroad. After a decade-long hiatus (1996-2006), Havana's masterminds Hannu Leiden (voc) and Crazy Heiskanen (gtr) regrouped and rejuvenated the band, and are now touring the land as powerful as ever, recording fresh material for a new album. Their two new songs on this compilation are but a taster of great things to come......... ..JACKRABBIT...... Back in 1991 four young men from Pori, Finland, came together to share their common vision and musical taste for 70's stuff. We're talking bands like Skynyrd, Blackfoot, AC/DC, The Stones... bands that in this "grunge"-filled period were not exactly fashionable. The guys played their first ever gig in a dirty little joint called "The 8 Ball", and from that day on, Jackrabbit have been rockin' it out around the Finnish mainland trying to make themselves proud in what they do best - play rock 'n' roll the way it should be......... ..LOS BASTARDOS FINLANDESES...... Formed in 2005 from some of the most well-known bands on the Finnish rock scene, the success of Los Bastardos Finlandeses lies in their amazing live performances. They play loud and fast in the finest traditions of hard rock and have been compared to a lethal cocktail of Thin Lizzy and Motörhead. Over the past three years the "boyband from hell" have been on the road pretty much constantly, and continue to unleash their brand of high voltage motor rock, building on the success of their third album, El Grande's Saloon. This is a full-frontal assault of louder-than-hell Bastardos boogie. Sin Piedad! ........ ..MELROSE...... This band has been around for a long time. Formed in 1981 as a somewhat odd rockabilly outfit, Melrose expanded their likings towards edgier and rougher sounds, evolving into one of the most energetic live acts on the circuit. While the musical climate in Finland in the 80's favored melancholy pop sung in Finnish, a furious trio with song titles like "Gang War" and "Rich Little Bitch" was bound to shake the cage! Their early records did very well on the national charts and made Melrose a household name and constant live favourite among all music lovers in Finland - be it rocker, biker or psychobilly. The band continues gigging actively, so if you have a chance to check them out live, don't miss it. There's no substitute - Melrose rules!........ ..PEER GÜNT...... Peer Günt is the undisputed big bad daddy of Finnish rock'n'roll, who in reality needs no introduction. Every single living soul in the country is familiar with Günt's boogie-influenced hard-rockin', machine gun rhythm 'n' blues and most of us have witnessed this remorseless live act in action several times through the decades. Being the hardest working rock band around, Peer Günt has been speeding fast and loud for 30 years and still counting. It all started in the late 70's with main man T. Nikki already behind the wheel. Throughout the 80's Peer Günt got a handful of hits which are now considered corner stones of Finnish rock'n'roll. But the story is far from over, and their ninth studio album Buck The Odds has gained great and well deserved response. And naturally the band is on the road again - all the time!........ ..ROCK CADILLAC...... Rock Cadillac was founded in Vaajakoski, Finland in 1974. The group released two LP records in the late 70's, but eventually broke up due to musical differences. Now in the new millennium Rock Cadillac is back on track with new material, exactly like true rock should be; a plain two-by-four plank - fresh, firm and straight up! ........ ..SCREAMING NIGHT HOG...... The first southern rock connection of Screaming Night Hog goes all the way back to the late 70's involving a band called Grand Merlin, one of the first pure "southern style" bands in Finland, which successfully covered "Sweet Home Alabama" in a Finnish rendition, "Rautalampi". The current outfit (named after the Steppenwolf classic) was formed in 2004 starting off by covering some golden greats like Skynyrd, the Allmans, Hatchet, the Mule and ZZ Top. It comes as no surprise that the band's original material is heavily influenced by all these, as well as incorporating a slight progressive element. On the rare occasion when the Hog hits the stage you will be met with an intense display of some good ol' southern vibrations......... ..THE BLACK LEAGUE...... From the love of Skynyrd and Venom was born The Black League! The story of the band began in 1997 when a bunch of notorious Metal veterans from Northern Finland teamed up to whip out a more vicious rockin' brand of heavy music. A decade later into the new millennium the League has five (& a half) albums under their belt and are widely recognized as one of the "true originals" of modern day Rebel Rock, as well as a ruthless and unpredictable live act. Not unlike their contemporary American peers, Down & CoC, The Black League pay clear homage to 70's (Southern) Rock while staying true to their solid (Northern) Metal roots. The rebel flag waves on!........ ..THE MILESTONES...... Helsinki-based rock band The Milestones has been on the quest to find the real roots of rock and roll throughout their career and with their robust third album Devil In Me, they may just have found what they're looking for. Bold, soulful and groovy are the attributes that best describe The Milestones, whose 70's influences include pioneers such as The Allman Bros, AC/DC and Bad Company. The rootsy sound of The Milestones is built on Olavi Tikka's recognizable voice, in which you can hear hints of David Coverdale and Paul Rogers. Together with two perfectly interacting guitars and a ballsy rhythm section the band can do no wrong. ........ -

NORTH WILL RISE AGAIN
It's hard to say when and where exactly a concept such as "Finnish Southern Rock" was initially coined. Perhaps it was 1988 and the Provinssirock festival, where famous musician, psychologist and latter-day politician "Veltto" Virtanen mixed up our very own Havana Black with the all-American Georgia Satellites: "Man, I wish we had bands that can play Southern rock so good in Finland, too!"
