Mind-bending logic. Soulful melodies. Body shaking grooves. No Sale Value fuses these basic elements of music with cutting-edge soundscapes to create a wild new esthetic. Breakbeat, funk, nu-bop, livetronic, avant-garde- No Sale Value at once embraces and defies all conventions. As N$V producer Michael Cain, keyboardist with Meshell NDegeocello, and Jack DeJohnette states: This music touches a lot of worlds, in ways people havent thought about before. Its gonna turn a LOT of heads.
Founded in 2001 by saxophonist Pat Donaher, No Sale Value quickly earned notice with its unique sound and deep grooves in its inaugural residency at New Yorks legendary Knitting Factory. Taking its name, and its inspiration, from the world of big-money auctionhouses, the band sought to merge high ideals and pop culture, their conservatory training and what they heard on New Yorks high octane dance scene. The music rises from Donahers sketches or group free improvisations, propelled by Chris Vatalaros explosive drumming, bassists Tom Masons deep foundations and taken to other planets by the otherworldly technique of trumpeter/vocalist Matt Shulman, DJ Industrial Average, and Donaher himself.
The sound comes into focus on Nu Currency. from the overdriven frenzy of the opening track Guarantee, to the brain-bending grooves of Masons Strut, to the serene meditation of the title track. Live, the band is propelled further by Sunny Kim outlandish vocalist, frontwoman and general free spirit, and the space age musings of guitarist Sasha Brown. Live, shows are a wild ride. The band aims for the seamless flow and deep grooves of the best DJ sets, combined with the energy great improvisers can bring. The band has turned heads and shook backsides down the right coast, for colleges and roadhouses, clubs and concerthalls.
Nu Currency is available through Cdbaby.com, as well as Rhapsody and Itunes. A new EP is planned for early 2006.
