BBC Alba - TV programme 'Rapal' article on Nos Ur 2008
Nòs Ùr (meaning ‘new style' in Scottish Gaelic) is a song competition in the Celtic and Scots languages which is a regional final for the pan-European minority languages song competition – Liet International, to be held in October 2009 in Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands. Languages accepted in Nòs Ùr are: Scots & Ulster Scots, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish, Breton.
On 20 June 2009 two acts will be chosen (one jury vote, one public vote) in Inverness to represent the Celtic and Scots languages/regions at the Liet International competition in Friesland.
UHI Millenium Institute will hold an academic conference on minoriity languages at Eden Court on 20 June 2009 to tie in with the Nos Ur event. There will also be a youth concert called Nòs Òg on Friday night, 19 June 2009, at Eden Court which will showcase some of the best up and coming teenage bands singing in the various Celtic and Scots languages. There will be workshops on the music industry for bands on the Saturday morning, 20 June, at Eden Court. All welcome.
Aims and Objectives :
Foster new writing in indigenous languages
Develop links and dialogue between artists and related creative industries within Western Europe
Encourage and increase cultural tourism where the event takes place
Promote and encourage the use of indigenous minority languages
Strengthen the image and self worth of minority language speakers
Provide economic opportunities and development for artistes and creative industries.
Promote the region to a wide audience through media and public/private sector interest.
Develop co-operation and interaction between academic institutions and minority linguistic communities.
Increase knowledge and skills in local and international event management in the private and public sector.
“Initiatives such
as the Nòs Ùr regional contest and the Liet Lavlut, where
Europe's regional and minority languages are in the limelight,
provide an ideal opportunity to give these languages a new
lease of life and a positive image which is often sorely
lacking, particularly among young people. What better way to
unite people, than with the universal language of music? These
events substantially contribute to the richness of Europe, its
culture and its diversity.” Sonia Parayre,
Council of Europe Official, co-Secretary of the Committee of
Experts to the European Charter for Regional or Minority
Languages

We are trully honored to have won and are extremely looking forward to be playing in Liet Lavlut later this year. the whole thing is still sinking in....slowly but surelly.
Congratulations to ALL who reached the final, but especially to the two winners. Wish I could have been there. Please post some photos. Do you know if it'll be shown later on TV? Will there be a CD of all the songs that made it to the final? Cheers, Ptarmigan
