Jon Valentine has been writing rhymes since the third grade. In fourth grade a poem about Christmas was put into the Omaha paper and also won a poetry contest at his school with it. While living in Japan, during his 8th grade year, Jon recorded his first flows onto cassette tapes and showed them to his friends on the school bus via a Sony tape walkman. Throughout highschool he wrote small things on the side until his senior year in California. His friend Davis (Heavy D) decided they should record a rap album just for the fun of it. Heavy D was involved with local bands so he had an entire studio set up in his living room at home and the project went under way. After hours of recording and writing the album was finished. The mood of the album was pure amusement, doing parodies of songs while giving shoutouts to friends. Since both Heavy D and Jon played Tuba and were overweight, that was what most of the album was about. It was a huge success and quite a few copies of the CD were distributed, 200 if not more. Everyone that got a copy loved it. While at the Fairfield Mall during a Christmas celebration Jon was approached by a classmate's little brother asking what a set of lyrics meant. That was cool. Upon coming to Augustana Jon spent a lot of time in front of the computer typing up lyrics fueled on lonliness and hatred. Being new to a school wasn't easy but it did give him the free time and inspiration to write a set of songs that are classics. Some are displayed on Augustana Mixtape Vol. 1 - which was released at the beginning of his junior year. Features included DJ Surreal (John), Abstract (Ian), G-Money (Grant), along with L.A.S. and Rekken. Due to the success of Vol. 1 Jon decided to pursue this mixtape creation process and created a second Augustana Mixtape to be released at his Amateur Night performance with DJ Nyx at the tables in May of 06. With the leading "singles" J.O.N. and The Grocery Shop (parody of Candy Shop feat. Big T) the mixtape was a huge success and about 150 + copies were distributed both on and off campus. While in Europe in June of 06 Jon wrote a 3 page rap which gave shoutouts to everyone on the tour as well as mentioning things they had done. Given the demographics of the crew on tour..adults mainly, they surprisingly loved it. Over the summer of 06 Jon decided to work on yet another volume in this mixtape lineage and with the recording rig of Jason came the 22 track mixtape. Volume 3 displays a more darker edge to it and Jon has gotten positive feedback from it due to his honesty in his lyrics. Jon joined DJ Nyx on October 20th to perform at Trick or Trance (a techno rave) in Pierre.
How had we managed not to be "friends" before?! (But seriously, that was one of the coolest/creepiest - jk - phone calls ever!) Love the page...how much do your CD's go for?
Awesome. My kids loved it too! I never thought, after becoming friends in our Capstone, that you had this talent. Even after our Glory presentation, I am still impressed. How do we get the other mix CD's. My 2 oldest love the music too.
I sent him a text message and asked him if he was planning on moving to Seattle with me in a couple of years since he's going to be throwing me over his shoulder. He didn't respond or anything. So we'll see what he has to say when I come down. :D
