The beginnings of the band as a basic song-writing and practice unit formed in 2000, when school-friends, drummer Sam and guitarist Ishan, grew tired of formal jazz ensembles and decided it was time to shred. A short time later, in response to the short-notice offer of a paid gig at a large private function, the two advertised and quickly found bassist Jon. As chance would have it, the musical relationship worked well, and the fully-improvised show was a complete success. NQV had begun. One year, two singers, and numerous gigs later (Hopetoun Hotel, Northpoint Tavern, Green Square Hotel, Bat and Ball Hotel and others), Alana joined the band and everything fell into place. The band has since played numerous venues and functions, among them, The Metro Transit Lounge, Bar Broadway, The Gaelic Club, The Cat and Fiddle, The Hollywood Hotel, The Glasshouse Bar UTS, and the aforementioned establishments.
Musicality and musicianship have always been a priority for NQV. All the members are formally trained in their instruments, have taught professionally, and have long personal histories of performance and musical involvement. Aside from the range of influences, what makes the band unique is the fluency of its members in all styles.
