Se la data di nascita ufficiale dei Novecento è quella del 1984, va detto che di musica in famiglia se ne respirava già fin da quando erano piccolissimi e che non si è mai smesso di farne. Parlare di Novecento inoltre, come detto, significa anche parlare di famiglia perché, tutti fratelli, Rossana, Pino, Lino Nicolosi prendono confidenza già a pochissimi anni con scale e armonia. La prima foto infatti che li ritrae insieme agli strumenti tastiere (Pino) chitarra (Lino) e basso elettrico(Rossana), risale a quando avevano tra i 5 e 6 anni. Il primo passaggio sul palco due anni dopo, in trio. Dire oggi che la loro strada era ben segnata, appare scontato. Nel ’77 arriva Dora. Era la voce che mancava. Il sodalizio artistico venne consacrato, come consacrata fu poi in seguito l’unione con Lino, che diventò suo marito. Una formula invidiabile apre la strada del futuro successo: compiti musicali suddivisi senza problemi, la collaborazione di tutti come autori dei pezzi, nonché chiaro il genere musicale a cui i quattro si ispirano, che spazia dal jazz, al funky, al pop. Con arrangiamenti di gusto semplice ma mai scontato, commerciali ma con evidente tendenza all’internazionalità, compongono brani che, nei loro concerti in giro per club e locali vari, alternano spesso e volentieri a quelli di successo dell’epoca, ispirandosi ai musicisti che li appassionano, tra i quali Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Billy Cobham, Genesis, Pink Floyd. Ed è proprio questo l’aspetto più sorprendente di questo gruppo: come siano sempre riusciti a ricreare atmosfere che si pensava fossero esclusiva caratteristica dei musicisti stranieri. Ma ai Novecento, così a loro agio nel mondo musicale, il fatto di essere “solo” un gruppo va un po’ stretto e quindi decidono di allestire uno studio di registrazione in casa loro ed iniziano a produrre. Con due brani The Night, interpretato da Valerie Dore e Call me Mr. Telephone, interpretato dalla cantante americana Cheyne, di cui sono autori e produttori, i Nicolosi arrivano ai primi posti delle classifiche italiane, europee ed addirittura della dance statunitense. Il magico 1984 porta, insieme alla firma del contratto con la WEA, il loro primo successo Movin’on per parecchie settimane al primo posto in classifica, circa 100.000 copie vendute solo in Italia nonché il premio come Migliore rivelazione dell’anno assegnato nella trasmissione Azzurro ’84 - prima delle centinaia di trasmissioni che li hanno ospitati. Alla fine dell’84 esce il secondo singolo The only one, tormentone dell’estate successiva, e pure il primo album intitolato semplicemente Novecento, prodotto dagli stessi membri del gruppo, registrato nel loro studio e mixato a Londra. Nel febbraio ‘86 esce un altro singolo Excessive love accompagnato da un video di altissimo livello. Un'altra spinta alla loro notorietà viene dalla pubblicità: la GervaisDanone di Torino utilizza Excessive love per la campagna di Dan‘up. È il loro ingresso in quel mondo: arriva così un’.. di jingle, passaggi video e la richiesta di brani originali per altri spot. Contemporaneamente esce anche il secondo album della band: Dreamland e poi un nuovo lancio con Dreamland Paradise, per il quale un altro video non poteva mancare. Per i quattro si preannuncia un’intensa stagione estiva, impegni promozionali e live: non mancano, ad esempio, a nessuna delle puntate del Festivalbar di cui sono oramai ospiti fissi dall’84. Ma da questo momento in poi le novità non si contano più: si susseguono svariati album, la firma di un nuovo contratto discografico con la Five Records, con la quale il gruppo conquista anche il mercato internazionale. Nel ’95 compiono quello che considerano il passo più importante della loro carriera: un contratto con una delle più prestigiose case discografiche inglesi di proprietà del produttore Trevor Horn, la ZTT distribuita dalla Warner Music. Nel catalogo della ZTT, i Novecento compaiono al fianco di nomi come Tina Turner, Frankie goes to Hollywood, e Seal. Con l’etichetta inglese un altro singolo, Day and Night, già pubblicato in Italia con Baby Records, viene remixato dal gruppo stesso con la collaborazione di David Morales, Rapino Brothers, Grinstretcher and Emmbee. Per realizzare il secondo video sul remix di questo singolo una troupe britannica si sposta fino alla lontana Sicilia (il primo era stato girato a Londra) mentre il brano si allontana ancora di più ed arriva all’Atlantic, una delle più prestigiose etichette americane. L’ultima uscita discografica a loro nome è del ‘97, C’è un mondo che , peraltro l’unico album con testi in italiano. Da lì in poi dei Novecento si parla solo come produttori ma sarà tutta un’altra storia…………….. N O V E C E N T O oggi ………. Era ovvio infatti che la crescita musicale dei Novecento, maturata nell’arco di tutti quegli anni ai vertici delle classifiche e la loro passione per tutte le forme stilistiche più o meno collegate alla musica afro-americana, li portassero ad avvicinarsi al Jazz. Certamente più svincolati dalle logiche di mercato cui si sono sottoposti per molto tempo, con il coraggio di esplorare strade nuove, cominciano a produrre artisti di fama internazionale provenienti dal soul e dal funk. Negli studi di San Giuliano, dove risiedono, dal 1998 in poi, si affacciano nomi famosi a livello mondiale. Per Billy Preston producono un album dal titolo You and I. La formula, oltre che alla loro presenza nella veste di compositori e produttori, vede il nucleo del gruppo sempre partecipe nella realizzazione dell’album sia come musicisti sia come arrangiatori. Per Osibisa producono Collection, in cui i brani della famosa band sono stati ri-arrangiati in chiave soul-funky più attuale. E così anche per Delegation con The Best, che in un certo senso si è rivelato essere il punto di partenza per la nascita di un nuovo ciclo di collaborazioni con alcuni manager e, in particolare, con Alejandro Orellana della Color of Sound. Nel 2001, producono infatti Drum'n voice del mitico batterista Billy Cobham, album che ha ospiti tra i più importanti nomi del Jazz mondiale: i fratelli Brecker, Eddie Gomez. Contemporaneamente a questo album, che viene lincenziato da ben 24 consorelle Sony in tutto il mondo, si associa la nascita delle etichette che fanno capo alla Nicolosi Productions: J.Jazz, Just Groove, Just Music che nell’immediato futuro si aggiudicano senza sosta prestigiosissime produzioni mai distribuite in Italia come: Live Takes di Toots Thielemans, In Harmony's way di Jeff Berlin, The things I see di Gary Husband. E siamo al 2002: molti dei musicisti che avevano accettato di unirsi al nome di Billy Cobham proseguono la collaborazione sui nuovi progetti dei Nicolosi, progetti con i quali riescono ad interessare nuovi artisti: Dave Liebman, Guy Barker, Wayne Dockery, John Tropea. Tutti personaggi che garantiscono un apporto fondamentale allo sviluppo delle nuove produzioni dei Nicolosi: i nuovi album di Stanley Jordan, Danny Gottlieb e Jeff Berlin attualmente in lavorazione. Ma anche al nuovo album dei Novecento - Novecento Featuring ….. - il loro omaggio al nuovo corso della loro fantastica carriera.

The first artist signed to the newly revitalized Blue Note Records in the mid-80s, the guitarist quickly established himself as a jazz virtuoso by virtue of his trademark “tapping technique.” Yet he never limited himself, creating modern instrumental classics out of rock standards (“Stairway to Heaven,” from 1988’s Flying Home) and treasured classical pieces (“Bolero,” from 1994’s Bolero). Dreams of Peace, the culmination of his electrifying association with the popular Italian jazz ensemble Novecento, follows in this powerfully eclectic tradition and marks Jordan’s long awaited return to studio recordings after a decade long hiatus. The nine track recording--a colorful blend of ambient music, funky and smooth soul-jazz and blistering rock fusion featuring appearances by notable jazz artists Randy Brecker (trumpet), Dave Liebman (tenor sax) and Danny Gottlieb (drums). Jordan’s unique association with Novecento—writer/producer siblings Lino (guitar), Pino (keyboards) and Rossanna (bass) Nicolosi, with Lino’s wife Dora as lead singer—grew out of his career-long commitment to creative and cultural exploration. “Many musicians started canceling their travel plans after 9/11, but I deliberately chose to go overseas more,” Jordan says. “I decided to work with Novecento after a friend told me about this Italian group that played great instrumental pop. I hope this project will help promote friendship at a difficult time for world affairs. We recently played in the United Arab Emirates and the welcome we received was fantastic!” Such is bound to be the case stateside when listeners become reacquainted with Jordan’s amazing musicianship. The opener “Tell Me Something” is a dreamy, film score like seduction, its dramatic orchestral ambience enhanced by Dora’s lush vocals and Jordan’s elegant acoustic guitar melody. The first scheduled single is “Flying to the Sky,” a moody, easy grooving soul-jazz tune featuring a soaring electric guitar and trumpet melody and Pino’s playful keyboard lines. Jordan’s lead guitar lines alternate moods on the next two pieces, the blues and jazz drenched “Too Close To The Sun” (featuring a languid string melody and sassy horns on the rise) and the punchy rock-oriented vocal “Sky Flower,” highlighted by lead singer Gregg Brown, Rossana’s throbbing bass and Jordan’s feisty, breakneck speed electric licks. “Destination of My Heart” takes Jordan and Novecento back to a bluesy jazz realm, with a colorful guitar melody duetting with Dora’s soaring wordless vocals. Listeners in a mellow mood will be happily jolted out of their comfort zone with the fiery mix of dense percussion, organ harmonies and blistering lead guitar lines of “Spring”. It’s the disc’s one true rockin’ jam session amidst the overall cool vibe, which continues beautifully on the ultra-soulful title track. Dreams of Peace closes with two snappy funk numbers, the spirited, horn-embellished “Easy Love” (with some of Jordan’s most lyrical playing ever) and the strutting, R&B-influenced sing-along rocker “I Can Show You Something.” Jordan’s collaboration with Novecento—which has included extensive touring in Europe—will no doubt heighten stateside awareness of the Nicolosis’ music, which has been part of the European landscape since their 1984 debut. To date, the band’s best known international releases have been Wait For Me (1994, on ZYX Music) and Day & Night (Atlantic, 1996). Other recordings in their catalog include Shine, Leaving Now and Dreamland. Since 1997, the principals in Novecento have balanced a busy performance schedule with a thriving record production company and studio, Nicolosi Productions, dedicated to creating globally successful and critically acclaimed jazz/fusion recordings. Among their most renowned sessions are Billy Preston’s You and I, Billy Cobham’s Drum ‘n Voice (released by 24 Sony Music Group affiliated companies), Jeff Berlin’s In Harmony’s Way, Toots Thielemans’ The Live Takes, Gary Husband’s The Things I See and a self titled release by The Danny Gottlieb Trio. Jordan’s overwhelming acclaim was due in large part to his discovery of a new way to play the guitar. Although he was not the first to use tapping—a technique designed to achieve a level of orchestral complexity equaling that of a keyboard instrument—his expertise gave him the ability to play two completely independent lines or “two guitars” at the same time. He earned a degree in music theory and composition from Princeton, but chose to start out professionally as a street musician playing in Philadelphia, New York and towns in the Midwest and the South. His second Blue Note disc, Magic Touch (1985), was 1 on Billboard’s Jazz Chart for 51 weeks, was certified gold in the U.S. and Japan and earned him two Grammy nominations; its cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Lady in My Life” is considered a contemporary jazz standard. On the strength of this and subsequent best selling recordings (Flying Home, the Grammy nominated Cornucopia, Street Talk and the live set Stolen Moments), Jordan became a media sensation, appearing in films, late night TV shows, and on VH1 and BET. Jordan spoke plainly about his penchant for perfectionism and the pressures of being a guitar virtuoso: “I have this sound inside me that is greater than anything I have ever played on my guitar. Developing a new technique helped me get closer to it, but that only took me so far. I found that I had to look inward and develop myself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually so that I could overcome all roadblocks to making that inner music. Until I had achieved that, nothing else would do. I didn’t want to release any music at all if it wasn’t going to be my best.” As a result, while Jordan made a great deal of music in the 90s, very little of it was ever recorded or commercially released; his last album before the current disc with Novecento was 1998’s Live in New York). When Jordan joins Novecento onstage Stateside in the wake of the release of Dreams of Peace, he will bring his desire for spiritual healing along with the virtuosity his fans have longed for years to reconnect with. “Right now, I feel a strong desire to bring my music to the people—not just for entertainment, but also for inspiration and healing,” he says. “And I feel I’ve found a good balance. I’m working with more discipline and devotion than ever…I feel good about the music I’m making these days. For the first time, I can truly say there is absolutely nothing stopping me from putting together the music just as I hear it and feel it inside.”

Festival degli Autori di Sanremo	May 17 2009 6:16 AM Cari amici, abbiamo costruito una stanza dove autori ed interpreti, cantautori ed arrangiatori di chiara fama, fonici e direttore artistico (insomma Artisti), buttano via la maschera e si mettono in discussione per costruire tutti insieme una Manifestazione. Fin qui tutto bene, se non fosse che questa stanza è dentro il Palafiori di Sanremo, che il tutto è stato messo a disposizione dal Comune per vedere che riusciamo a combinare e che i soliti noti sono li pronti con il fucile puntato per dire il solito " lo avevamo detto, noi...." Per cui chiamiamo a raccolta tutti coloro che si lamentano che non va bene niente, per provare, almeno provare, a riempire uno spazio d'autore tanto faticosamente conquistato. Il terzo ed ultimo Campus, prima della pre-finale, sara' il 29-30-31 maggio e avremo l'onore ed il piacere di ospitare Aida Satta Flores e Valeria Visconti. Festival degli Autori di Sanremo	May 10 2009 6:32 AM Cari amici, abbiamo costruito una stanza dove autori ed interpreti, cantautori ed arrangiatori di chiara fama, fonici e direttore artistico (insomma Artisti), buttano via la maschera e si mettono in discussione per costruire tutti insieme una Manifestazione. Fin qui tutto bene, se non fosse che questa stanza è dentro il Palafiori di Sanremo, che il tutto è stato messo a disposizione dal Comune per vedere che riusciamo a combinare e che i soliti noti sono li pronti con il fucile puntato per dire il solito " lo avevamo detto, noi...." Per cui chiamiamo a raccolta tutti coloro che si lamentano che non va bene niente, per provare, almeno provare, a riempire uno spazio d'autore tanto faticosamente conquistato. Il terzo ed ultimo Campus, prima della pre-finale, sara' il 29-30-31 maggio e avremo l'onore ed il piacere di ospitare Aida Satta Flores e Valeria Visconti. Chi ha voglia di fare questa fanstastica esperienza, ha tempo fino al 20 maggio per iscriversi.
