   About Noveller
Noveller is the solo project of Brooklyn-based sound artist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. She has performed in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, and as a member of Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. In March 2008, Lipstate joined Parts & Labor as their new guitarist.

Last year, Lipstate performed as part of the Underground at the Abrons performance series at the Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In December, she played at the Un Son Par Là, Music of Today festival in Nîmes, France. She recently performed in the revival of Rhys Chatham and Karole Armitage's "Drastic-Classicism" as part of the Think Punk! program at The Kitchen in NYC. Following that performance, she joined Rhys Chatham and his cast of guitar-allstars at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a performance of his minimalist punk classic "Guitar Trio".

In April, No Fun Productions released her debut LP Paint on the Shadows. Following the release, Lipstate performed at No Fun Fest at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. No Fun Productions is scheduled to release a full-length CD follow-up in September.

Her short films have screened for two consecutive years at SXSW, and earned Lipstate the "Diamond in the Rough Cut" award for exceptional emerging filmmaker at Cinematexas 2006. Her short, Memory Scars, screened at the Reel Venus Film Festival at Anthology Film Archives in NYC in October 2008. She debuted her most recent short film Interior Variations at the New Museum in NYC as part of No Fun: Infinite Sound and Image in May.

She has previously performed as one-half of the experimental duo One Umbrella and as a member of the Brooklyn trio Sands.

Lipstate received a BS in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin in December 2006, and currently resides in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.

Red Rainbows CD (No Fun Productions)
Release date: September 1st, 2009

"Debut CD from Brooklyn musician and film maker Sarah Lipstate. Red Rainbows is full of growing tonal drones that evoke visions of menacing multicolored skies alongside tracks full of beautiful minimalist structures that shoot straight for the heart. Sarah uses double-neck guitar and various electronics to create breathtaking atmospheres with an intensity that works on both a cognitive and emotional level. These tracks are either really beautiful or really dirty when the time is right, which is the key here. Sarah knows what she is doing and when to do it. This is an essential initial document from one of the new artists bending abstract sound into meaningful structures. Includes a collaboration with Carlos Giffoni. This is an enhanced CD and includes the short film “Interior Variations”. Artwork by Caroline Contillo."

Paint on the Shadows LP (No Fun Productions)

"Paint On The Shadows begins with a liltingly pretty, side-long construction of intertwining guitar loops and elliptical fingerpicked patterns that conjures all of the best that Grouper and Colleen had managed through their loopstation laboratories. All of these sounds blossom out of a harmonic bed of bowed guitar drones; and steady low end thrums sublimate into richly plucked chiming notes that could even double for Jozef Van Wissem. The flipside offers up two pieces which seem to reflect her live presentations, with ebows, motors, and hand-held tape decks driving the strings and pick-ups from her double necked guitar. With precise placements of the ebows and some choice tremolo effects, Lipstate generates phasing tones often heard in the cosmic explorations of Eno & Fripp's No Pussyfooting or certainly not that far from Emeralds." - Aquarius Records

This Heat Will Melt The Earth cassette (Baked Tapes 2008)

"Noveller is the sonic personification of rolling waves, brush fires and distant bird songs. All of which are accomplished by the contrast of distant chiming bells, primal singing and brick walls of feedback. "This Heat Will Melt The Earth" begins with a subtle lyrical beauty that lies in stark contrast with the grimy sound masses that follow. This release covers more ground than most noisicians would dare to try. This full spectrum of expression is why Noveller, aka Sarah Lipstate, stands out from the bulk of noisicians. As a whole this release makes one coherent thought which is equally effect as it's five constituent parts." - Dracula Trap
