About me: “One long string of numbers, that’s it. That’s what I boil down to. No face. No name.
At first, I thought I would parade around flashing an important badge, wearing a dark suit and shades. What did I know? There’s no recognition, not unless you screw up. Then, the whole world sees you and comes down on you, or no one ever sees you again.
Me, I’m a ghost. No, that’s not true; even ghosts have a past, something that holds them to this world.
My parents were killed in the first war. As far as I’m concerned, they were its first victims…or maybe I was. I moved in with my aunt, but that was short lived. Soon, the revival took place, and my loving aunt became something less than human. Foster care bounced me from place to place.
At seventeen, I found my true love and my new family: the Marine Corp. In a world where purebred human is becoming the minority, the Corp was my saving grace. It offered me a channel for my aggression, destinations for travel, and it led me straight to her.
My destiny and my ruin lied in the arms of a merciless lover: the Agency. Most stories have a beginning, a middle, and a happy ending. For an Agent, the end is always near, and the beginning becomes a lifetime ago.
Welcome to year twenty one forty two. The human race clambers for one last hurrah in the wake of rebuilding the earth after global nuclear war. This is my home. Fate offers few warnings and plots your path before you even begin to conceive a plan. My fate is to feel, and that is my mistake, mine alone.”

'City Smells' is a new literary project set up by the Edit Red Writing Community.
We are running three writing competitions, Flash Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction and Poetry, all with the theme 'City Smells. The winners of each of these competitions will win $100. But more than this, we will take the best work from each competition and compile a paperback 'City Smells' anthology. The writers who make it into the 'City Smells' anthology will each receive free copies of the book and be paid a royalty in book sales.
To submit to these competition and stand a chance of being published in the 'City Smells' book you must be a member of Edit Red, as the submission process is automated. Joining Edit Red and entering these competitions is 100% free. If you make it into the book, we will pay royalties based on book sales.
Edit Red has existed for many years and was created and is still managed today by non-fiction author Alan Emmins, creative writing teacher Chris Lee Ramsden and literary reviewer Sean Merrigan.
If you are not already a member, we hope you will join and take part in this great literary event. Sign up here for free!
