About me:
THE NEWS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER PITTSBURGH In 1939, several newspaper photographers sat down to discuss issues relative to newspaper photographers. The gathering that year resulted in the formation of one of the country's first press photographers professional groups. The first formal meeting of the Press Photographers Association of Pittsburgh took place in 1940. The purpose of the Press Photographers Association of Pittsburgh was to promote news photography and to assist the photographers in the city in gaining access to important news and sporting events. Among the first activities of the group was the first News Pix Salon, a juried exhibit of the best photography in 1939. The winning photos were displayed at the Carnegie Institute. While the PPAP was organizing, similar groups started to develop in several other cities, which eventually helped to form the National Press Photographers Association. In the late 1970's the PPAP became the News Photographers Association of Greater Pittsburgh. Today, the NPAGP is an organization of professional photographers and students from the Western Pennsylvania region, devoted to furthering the education and professional standards of photojournalism. Co-President - Justin Merriman Co-President - Andrew Russell Vice President - Bob Fritz Treasurer - Kurt Weber

Filmmakers Galleries presents photo exhibits by two prize-winning, New York-based photojournalists. Purple Hearts, an exhibit by Nina Berman, is a series of interviews and photos she took of wounded soldiers returning from Iraq. Running concurrently in the outer gallery is Grave and Deteriorating: Images of the Iraq War, a series of photos by Chris Hondros.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 7 at 7:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Nina Berman is scheduled to attend the opening reception.

The Purple Hearts project is a series of photographic portraits and interviews with American soldiers who were wounded in Iraq. It is a book, a DVD, and a series of fifteen 28"x28" color prints mounted for exhibition. The photos, which will be featured in this show, were taken at military hospitals, at Army bases and in soldiers’ homes across the US. The project brings awareness to the physical and psychological realities of returning veterans. The portraits have been shown in museums, galleries, universities, high schools and town halls, and embraced by all sectors of the political spectrum.

Berman, who lives and works in New York City, is an award-winning documentary photographer. Her work has taken her to dozens of countries including Afghanistan, Bosnia, India and Vietnam. She earned her BA from the University of Chicago and her MS from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She has worked for numerous publications, including National Geographic, TIME, and the New York Times Magazine. She is also on the faculty of the International Center of Photography. Her book, Purple Hearts – Back From Iraq, was published by Trolley in 2004. An article about and online gallery of this series appear Aug 22 in the New York Times.

Hondros’ Grave and Deteriorating is a series of color photographs from the front lines in Iraq, of both soldiers and Ira
