In the fall of 2005, three like-minded musicians came together by chance (maybe fate?) to try out some improvisational jams in the musical melting pot of Athens, Georgia. The instant they began to play off each other, even in its primitive form, they knew a spark had been ignited. The three continued to meet, growing with each session, and Nautilus was born. The core trio consists of Chris Keesecker on synthesizer/keyboards, Andrew Haynes on bass and laptop controls, and James Feeney on beats, whether they originate from his drum set or electronically. They combine their influences from a wide variety of music such as jazz, funk, electronica, soul, drum n bass, house, hip hop, world music and trance to create their infectious danceable grooves. Improvisation is still a major part of their playing to keep the fluid feel of their sound and to sustain the unpredictable excitement of the jam not only for the fans but also the band. Technology is incorporated into their live performances via a laptop running Ableton Live and Reason programs. While one song may be down-n-dirty funky, the next may have heads bobbing quickly to a melodic breakbeat groove. Nautilus aims to blur the lines between acoustic/electronic music, to create something unique, and most of all, to generate a great musical experience for all involved. They often have guest musicians on sax, guitar, percussion, and even raps to change things up. Now with a loyal Athens following, the group hopes to continue to rock shows in their hometown and elsewhere in the Southeast. The experience that is Nautilus will keep on evolving with every step into the future.
