Influences
That pain in the ass math teacher. That ever so present hang-over. That girl who lives down the street.
And all those bands who've spent their lives trying to make a point.
Null Friction strives to be a constant force in India's rock scene, in spite of having to deal with distances and the opposing forces of fixed life. Ever since we recorded our first demo in the extempore studio we put together in our school’s sports room, we’ve learnt how to never look back. We’ve learnt how to appreciate the faintest hint of enjoyment on the face of a listener in the crowd. We’ve learnt how to take a hit and still push on, undeterred. And in spite of being three unbalanced, uncultured and unorganized youth, we’ve learnt how to make you smile.
Null Friction is our constitution, our interpretation and our education.
The Long :
The skeleton of Null Friction was conceptualized when classmates, Abhishek and Shreyans, discovered each others interests in music. On the look out for a drummer, they encountered Ansh, who had just moved to Chennai a few days ago. It was only after growing close as a band that they were informed of their drummer’s musical history, or lack thereof. It turned out that Ansh was not even a drummer he just claimed to be one. But, up until they were told, neither of the other two knew this, and Ansh, delivering more and more outstandingly each time he played, gave them no reason to suspect.
In time, the band came up with a good number of songs and decided to spread it across. Being strong believers in the principle of Do it Yourself, the band recorded their first song, “Somehow”, in their schools Sports room with bare minimum recording equipment. The song was informally circulated on the internet and turned out to be a bigger success than they'd anticipated. After recording a few more songs in their living rooms, the band decided to go into the studio to record an album. Null Friction recorded four songs for their EP, World Wide Quiet. The album was sold at various venues by the members of the band and went on to sell almost all copies, within the first week itself!
From then on, there was no looking back, as Null Friction performed in competitions, gigs, festivals earning itself various accolades, praises and a steady fan following. It was during this time that Null Friction, took part in an essentially college level competition called “Underground 06”. Over the two days the competition lasted, the band came out with the coveted title “Last Band Standing” tagged to them. They also won various other awards such as best acoustic band, best own composition for the song “somehow”, Shreyans won the best vocalist award while Abhishek took away the best bassist award at the acoustic show.
Since then, Null Friction has, in the last two years or so, played over a hundred shows across India. Recently, in June 2008, Null Friction did a comprehensive tour of India. They played at prestigious festivals such as the annual “June Rock Out” and “Fete de la Musique” and also performed in Pondicherry, Bangalore, Chennai and at the Hard Rock Café in Bombay.
Incidentally, during this tour, the members of the band encountered a common inspiration and that was their Indian connection. Being inspired by the soils of India, the band has now decided to make use of their deep Indian roots to drive themselves up the ladder. Hence, nowadays they are deeply engrossed in working towards expressing this Indian connection through a more unique and distinct sound.
Null Friction has been rightly described by others as angry, powerful, and unpredictable. They are young, passionate, talented, and driven to do whatever it takes to go all the way. The newspaper reviews, radio broadcasts and various other accolades won by the band justify the same. Like they themselves say time and again, “We’ve got a drummer, a bass guitarist, a guitarist who sings, and an attitude and that’s all we need. Peace!”
