Eder Rocha (responsible for much maracatu knowledge the south of Brasil), the great Mestre Walter Ferreira de França, o mestre mais cabuloso de Recife, com todas a suas influencias passados pra nos, afoxe, coco, e boi. Reggae music, dub music, the good dj who selects rhythmic music and beats for our bodies to feel and move, drums, West African music, and all afro-diasporic music and roots music everywhere. Where rhythm and song are prevalent, in all its cultural manifestations and whatever instruments are being used, we are listening.
Nunca Antes is a percussion and performance troupe that primarily plays the music of the Maracatu Nations of Recife, Brasil. Our greatest school of influence is Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Recife. Various groups and traditions also inspire our approach, the maracatus, afoxés and côcos of North East Brasil complemented with our own homegrown styles and sensibilities. In a multi-cultural world, we bring our raw energy and acoustic dub to the city streets. The voice, direction and performance of Aline Morales are at the forefront of Nunca Antes’ percussion. Community-oriented and artistically focused, we are a living sound system, manifesting ourselves through song, rhythm, beat, movement and excitement.
A walking sound system with a heavy emphasis on the bass drums, the alfaias, Nunca Antes plays and entertains in any venue, holds weekly workshops for beginners and people already familiar with percussion and Brazilian rhythms, and brings raw performance to the street. Nunca Antes has developed a mystically enticing yet utterly roots stage show with a list of deep rhythms and song.
