Tom's Interests
|
| General | Cats, books, cooking, the outdoors, religion, history, family | | Music | Like to sing rather than listen, although I'm on a temporary hiatus from choral singing. | | Movies | Got a bunch of favorites: Batman Begins, Clerks II, Blazing Saddles, Casino Royale, Office Space, Shrek II, Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 | | Television | Mostly NBC: "The Office", "My Name is Earl", "30 Rock", "Last Comic Standing"(the only reality show I watch).
Plus local shows like "Svengoolie" and reruns of "Frasier". | | Books | Mostly scifi/fantasy and religion
For scifi, I loved Lois McMaster-Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan books best. Some of Vernor Vinge's work, like A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky is also very good. For fantasy, of course The Lord of the Rings(though I didn't think the movie was as good). Also, Emma Bull's The War for the Oaks and Tad Williams' The Flower War are great examples of urban fantasy.
For religion, many of the works of Madelaine L'Engle (she wrote a lot more than A Wrinkle in Time. Also Kathleen Norris and Thomas Merton. Two other books that come to mind are Tony Hendra's Father Joe, the Man Who Saved my Soul, and Daj Hammarskjold's Markings. | | Heroes | Jean Vannier, the creator of the L'Arche communities, which bring together the mentally disabled with ordinary people to live together.
Father Joe Warillow, from Hendra's book; clearly a saintly and wise man.
Daj Hammarskjold, not only the most highly regarded UN Secretary General but also a mystic with a strong ethic of Christian sacrifice.

Tom's Blurbs |
About me:
Not really (though there is a male nurse action figure available through Amazon and Archie McPhee)
I'm a 35 year old molecular biologist presently working for the University of Chicago. Until September, that is, when I become a student again and join the nursing master's program at DePaul University.
Other than that, what to tell? I'm single (never married), and live in Oak Park with my two cats, Opie and Joy (you'll hear more from them later). I've lived in the Chicago area for most of my life, except for two brief sojourns in Madison and North Carolina.
I was in North Carolina for grad school, at East Carolina University (home of the Fighting Pirates!). I did undergrad at Southern Illinois University (home of the Alcoholics, I mean the Salukis! ;) ).

Who I'd like to meet:
Pretty much anyone who might find my boring life vaguely interesting.
