Nuru Kane est originaire de le Médina à Dakar, Sénégal. Au départ il était membre d’une troupe de jeunes danseurs, et ce n’est qu’à l’adolescence qu’il s’est initié à la basse et a commencé à jouer et à chanter dans des groupes. Ses influences musicales comprennent entres autres et bien évidemment Youssou N’dour, la célébrité locale, mais il s’inspire autant du blues, du reggae que du jazz.

C’est à la fin des années 90, peu de temps avant s’être installé à Paris, que lors d’un premier voyage au Maroc il a véritablement découvert la musique gnawa. Il a été immédiatement captivé par les rythmes, l’énergie et la spontanéité du gnawa et il s’est vu envoûté par le son profond du guimbri. Muni de son propre instrument, il est alors rentré en Europe où il rejoint Thierry Fournel pour former le Bayefall Gnawa.

C’est en 2004, que loin de Paris le groupe s’est fait remarquer pour la première fois à la suite d’une invitation de dernière minute au Festival du Désert au Mali. Bien que leur concert ne se soit tenu que le dernier jour, bien que qu’il n’ait été nullement mentionné au programme, le succès du concert a été tel qu’il a tout de suite suscité l’attention d’une équipe de la BBC qui filmait le festival. Après ce succès, Nuru a été invité à se produire à Londres et à de nombreux autres concerts à travers l’Europe, en solo ou avec le Bayefall Gnawa, et un contrat avec World Music Network s’est finalisé.

Au cours de l’année 2006, son premier album SIGIL a été mis en vente à travers le monde entier. Il a tout de suite reçu un accueil chaleureux, mis en avant pour la qualité de sa production et la richesse de ses arrangements, par les principales revues musicales, les webzines et Dj de par le monde. Proclamé chef d’œuvre par le site rollingstone.com, l’album a été sélectionné parmi la sélection de Top of the Pops et décrit comme un « must have » par les éditeurs d’Amazon. Le succès de SIGIL s’est vu récompensé à Séville lors du Womex 2006 où le groupe a fait sensation, et a été nommé parmi les « best newcomer » du prix musiques du monde 2007 par la BBC3.

Nuru Kane s'affirme avec "Number One Bus" (Iris Music / Harmonia Mundi), son second album sorti début 2010, comme le nouveau grand compositeur / interprète africain.

Nuru Kane is a Senegalese singer/songwriter who plays guitar, bass and guimbri (a three-stringed Moroccan bass) in the band Bayefall Gnawa. Nuru's debut CD, Sigil, which was released in the UK on March 14th 2006 and the rest of the world on April 24th (by Riverboat Records and World Music Network) included griot, gnawa, and blues influences.

Born in the Senegalese capital of Dakar, he migrated in 1998 to Paris where his skills as a guitarist, bass player and singer put him in high demand both as a solo artist and as a guest for other ensembles.
However it was a trip to Morocco that exposed him to the music of the Gnawa (religious and social organizations that comprise of descendants of those West Africans who were brought as captives and slaves across the Sahara to Marrakech many centuries ago). The music of the Gnawa captivated Nuru to such an extent that it became the turning point in his musical career and has since come to define his unique sound.
Nuru left Morocco with the Guimbri (three stringed bass lute also known as the Sintir) and returned to Paris where he formed his own ensemble named ‘Bayefall Gnawa’, whose music reflects the meeting between North and West African musical styles.
In 2004 the ensemble was invited to perform at Mali’s legendary ‘Festival In The Desert’, and their impressive performance led to an invitation from the UK’s Riverboat Records to record an album. Out of this Nuru’s debut album Sigil was born, which seamlessly blends the sounds of the North African Gnawa with that of the Senegalese, whilst lyrically focusing on religious teachings, human emotions, morality, and the impact of colonization and violence.peace and love to any human in this world.

“ten years ago I released Diamono Euro, a disc for Africans about the new Euro currency sung in African languages,” says Kane. “Today I give you the music of Bayefall Gnawa, a blend of the rhythms and colours of traditional musics and Oriental and European sounds. my music is the result of all the meetings and reading that have inspired me. It is an open letter.”

Nuru establishes himself with "Number One Bus" (Iris Music / Harmonia Mundi), his second album which apparead in early 2010, as the next great African songwritter.
