Yes, this goes for NWJPB members too!
Since 1995, the NWJPB has been dedicated to teaching Scottish piping and drumming to young people in the Seattle area and Western Washington.
We are a competition and performance-oriented band, entering roughly 7 contests per summer, ranging from Vancouver BC Canada to Portland Oregon USA.
NWJPB is proud of the impact we are having both on youth and families through our unique cultural arts program, outreach and performances. The band traveled to Scotland 2008 and competed in several contest. They won 1st place at the Perth Highland Games, winning against the 2008 World, Scottish, European and Cowal Champions in Grade 4B
Our mission to promote the art of Scottish piping and drumming through performances and community awareness is based on a strong foundation of positive energy, support and encouragement among all of our members. We have seen even very young children encouraged to reach for new heights personally and musically.
Volunteer instructors donate tens of thousands of dollars worth of instruction during our twice a week practices, and dozens of volunteers support the youth and the fundraising required to provide uniforms, instruments, and travel costs for our successful trip to the World Pipe Band Championships competition in August of 2008.
We nurture a supportive learning environment and the band members treat each other with respect and are often seen cheering on solo competitors, exchanging high-five's and encouraging each other to step up and do great things.
After a very successful 2005 season, the band was upgraded from Grade 5 to Grade 4. The 2006 season saw the band make a huge leap forward in playing calibre and numbers. In three short years the organization has tripled in size and now holds a roster of over 30 members. All of whom are 18 or younger. The band placed well throughout 2006, as well as tying for "best drum corps" at the Pacific Northwest Highland Games, the biggest contest of the year.
2007 has been a successful year as well. NWJPB Grade 5 was undefeated in Grade 5 competitions, and Grade 4 won 1st place at the Tacoma and Whidbey Island Highland Games, 2nd in the Washington State Championships, and 2nd at the Portland Highland Games. Northwest Junior Pipe Band finished our competition season ranked 4th of 18 Grade 4 pipe bands who competed in BC Pipers' Assocation competitions.
SCOTLAND 2008! The band had a remarkable two week trip to Scotland in August, 2008.
Perth Highland Games: 1st place in a field of 24 bands, also winning against the Grade 4B World, European, Scottish, and Cowal champions from Edinburgh, Scotland.
Crieff Highland Games: 1st in a field of 12 Grade 4 pipe bands.
World Pipe Band Championships: 1 point out of first place in the qualifying round, 5th place of 23 pipe bands from around the world. The band brought home a shield for winning this placing.
North Berwick Highland Games: 5th in juvenile (having challenged up) and 7th in Novice. The band played in a downpour and waded through the mud, learning what the Scottish competition season can really deliver. It was the first competition for the band, and was a great test and challenge.
