"Primary" members: aRvin Clay: synthesis, audiosculpture, sequencing, conceptual morphology, machinery; Megan Irvine: violin, cello, FX, arrangements; Derek C. F. Pegritz: sequencing, rhythm programming, ambience, arrangements. However, many people have worked with us over the years as well, includingCorey Appleby, Caitlin R. Kiernan, and Jeremy Long and Alexx Reed of ThouShaltNot. The Crawling Chaos is, after all, not so much a band as it is an amorphous collective of eldritch musicians who randomly agglutinate to create eerie audio sculpture.

Sounds Like
Horror movie soundtracks convoluted with strange, alien beats a la Aphex Twin or Otto von Schirach, complicated with murky ethereal soundscapes reminiscent of Tangerine Dream or Delerium, and steeped in bizarre ambient atmospherics and sound sculpture clearly inspired by Skinny Puppy and the like.
Derek C. F. Pegritz, an H. P. Lovecraft scholar and longtime experimental music afficionado, founded Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos, in 1993 when he first discovered the wonderful world of making computer music on a beat-up 386 with 4mb of RAM and a brand-new 16-bit SoundBlaster Pro soundcard. The limited nature of computer recording in the 1990s made it prettymuch impossible for Pegritz to work with other musicians, even though he never planned for Nyarlathotep to be a solo effort. Nonetheless, after working alone for ten years (during which time he released the "first" Nyarlathotep album, Iä!, in 1999), Pegritz found himself working with Alexx Reed and Jeremy Long of ThouShaltNot on the EP, Our thoughts make spirals in their world (2003), a collection of incidental music to Caitlin R. Kiernan's brilliant novel Threshold. In fact, Caitlin herself appears on the EP as one of the voices! Shortly thereafter, Pegritz and longtime collaborator on other projects aRvin Clay joined the Crawling Chaos to produce another EP, A self-contemplating shadow, for another Caitlin R. Kiernan novel in 2005. Both EPs were released with special editions of her work through Subterranean Press. Wanting to expand their sound, especially now that technology had advanced to the point that Pegritz could easily turn his home computer into a home studio, Pegritz went looking for other musicians to join up. In 2007, Megan Irvine joined as violinist/cellist and occasional percussionist. The band is currently working on their "second" album Strange Aeons--which everyone is treating more like a proper debut than Iä! had been--which promises to be a double-CD avalanche of eerie, amorphous, but beautiful and, dare we say it? even occasionally danceable music to bring to life the sounds of H. P. Lovecraft's eldritch tales!
Nyarlathotep, The Crawling Chaos's Friend Space (Top 28)
"....Harken! There is none born among men that does not crawl upon the earth as an infant. And does not create Chaos as an infant, putting everything in his mouth, eating dirt, licking the dust, crawling upon his/her belly in the dust. Even Jesus Christ was as such a crawling chaos. To be a Crawling Chaos does not make one a Demon or devil therefore blaspheme not the Great Old Ones because they are Crawling Chaotic infants. All the Gods desire to be Crawling Chaotic Infants from time to time..."

"I hear the Crawling Chaos that calls beyond the stars..... And They created Nyarlathotep for Their messenger, and They clothed Him with Chaos that His form might be ever hidden amidst the stars.
Who shall know the mystery of Nyarlathotep? for He is the mask and will of Those that were... when time was not.
He is the priest of the Ether, the Dweller in Air and hath many faces that none shall recall.
The waves freeze before Him; Gods dread His call. In men's dreams He whispers, yet who knoweth His form?" ~AZ IF, Necronomicon C.C.C: www. cultovcrawlingchaos. ning. com/

HAPPY BIRTH DAY H.P. LOVECRAFT!!! (August 20, 1890 - March 15, 1937) The short story "AZATHOTH" was appearently the last thing Lovecraft wrote, the story was unfinished, it was found at the time of H.P. Lovecraft's death...
"...There were, in such voyages, incalculable local dangers; as well as that shocking final peril which gibbers unmentionably outside the ordered universe, where no dreams reach; that last amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the centre of all infinity - the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin, monotonous whine of accursed flutes; to which detestable pounding and piping dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic Ultimate gods, the blind, voiceless, tenebrous, mindless Other gods whose soul and messenger is the crawling chaos Nyarlathotep...."
