Nzinga Howard was born in Washington D.C. on July 6, 1975. Eldest son of eight siblings, he developed a strong sense of family, responsibility, and community at a very young age. A child prodigy, he taught himself to read at the age of 3. He began playing the trombone at the age of 5. His formal jazz and music theory training began at Ballou Sr. High School under the skillful and nurturing tutelage of Mr. Yuseef Chislom. He received his first formal trombone lessons from Wycliffe Gordon, principle trombonist of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra & The Wynton Marsalis Septet. He then went on to study jazz improvisation and trombone technique with the legendary Calvin Jones. He also studied trombone with Master Trombonist Dr. Paul Shultz. Nzinga went on to graduate with Honors from Howard University with a Bachelors Degree in Music Composition and a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies. A seasoned musician, Nzinga has toured throughout the United States as well as many foreign countries. He has composed a plethora of original compositions for every conceivable ensemble from solo piano to symphony orchestra. He has scored several films and served as musical director for several musicals. Well aware of the importance of the Arts, Nzinga is a dedicated music educator.
