"Cooper switches from rhythm guitar to the steel on a dime and the keening tones of the latter instrument define the band’s DNA." - Jim Abbott, Orlando Sentinel
For years multi-instrumentalist Tommy Cooper has added authentic tear-in-your-beer twang to notable outfits like The Token Gamblers, Matt Butcher and the Revolvers, The Anderson Gang, The Holden Boys, John Gallagher and the Painted Ladies, and more. Bandmates usually think they have a handle on Cooper's abilities but he often shows up with yet another instrument he's sussed out, making him consistently regarded as MVP for any project he approaches. When Cooper's intriguing original material started surfacing fellow musicians and audiences alike decided they wanted to see Tommy front and center; Tommy's response? The Oak Hill Drifters.
Also featuring Gus Ramage on Upright Bass (The Revolvers, Supervillains), Harmonica Player Rick Lane (Acoustic Swamp Project, Arms Harbor), and Lead Guitarist Ricky Melendy (The Token Gamblers).
Oak Hill's on-stage debut in December '08 included heart-felt covers of long forgotten country gems and also Cooper's own inspired originals. OHD has since starting collaborating on originals and started bringing in select Western Swing and Rockabilly numbers to the mix as well. What sets Oak Hill apart is a meeting of the minds - the joy of working and reworking a number in order to get it just right, combined with little more ambition than having a fine time and just doing their best to make sure audiences do the same.
