About me:

THIS WEEKEND!!!!
David Anthony's WORLD PREMIERE of his original play, CLOSE 2U, opens this weekend at the Oakland! 'Close2U' is a drama/comedy about showing your love and getting closer to the people you love. The play will creatively deal with cheating and strained relationships from an interesting point of view that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Shows are Friday and Saturday, August 10, 11, 17, and 18. Presale tickets can be purchased for $10.00 at http://spanishevangelical.org/index.cfm?i=1147&mid=21 or at the Spanish Evangelical Church on South Ave (across from the old Roadhouse) or for $15.00 at the door.

COMING SOON:
The Oakland will kick off their 2009-2010 Season with a rootin, tootin, high-falootin' musical! According to dramatists.com, "There's a new tenant at Armadillo Acres—and she's wreaking havoc all over Florida's most exclusive trailer park. When Pippi, the stripper on the run, comes between the Dr. Phil–loving, agoraphobic Jeannie and her tollbooth collector husband—the storms begin to brew."br />
THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL with music and lyrics by David Nehls, book by Betsy Kelso will be directed for the Oakland by Robert Dennick Joki with musical direction from Anthony Ruggiero (yes, the team that brought you Bat Boy and Reefer Madness)! Cast includes Melissa Cook, Gerri DeWitt, Jennifer Kuzeck, Molly Makselan, David Munnell, and Shawn Lockaton. Stage manager is Kim Nevel with assistance from Brittney Murphy. Costume design by Pam Sacui. Set design and sconstruction by Jim Canacci.

Who I'd like to meet:

We are always looking for PERFORMERS and ACTS! We're looking for diversity and new faces, so if you've always wanted to play at the Stage, now is your chance! I'd love to see jugglers, artists, players of odd instruments, funny comedians, dancers, bands, singers, yodellers, professional whip handlers, snake charmers, and anyone else who's interested get on stage!

Hosted as always by Brooke, the Stage is the PERFECT EXCUSE to check out the overflow of talent overtaking the downtown scene...and spend time doing something HIP and CUTTING EDGE in the city you love so much!!

The Stage is the Oakland's answer to open mic night. Part vaudeville, part variety show, and all talent, The Stage celebrates live performance in every format.

Spread the word, send us messages, leave us comments and ideas and suggestions. Be mean, be nice, be sweet...but please, be vocal! We need all the help we can get! CONTACT: Brooke at oaklandopenmic@gmail.com or check out www.theoaklandstage.blogspot.com

Here's a featured performance from the Stage in April 2008.

Wow. I am SO excited to have seen a production like this one. I was VERY involved in theatre years ago & have become a bit of a snob. I walk out of shows immediately if I see "acting". I can't stand the feeling of pitying performers. I'm a tough sell. There were moments I felt myself about to scream out... GO WITH HER!!! or fighting the urge to climb into that hotel room... try to comfort Agnes and Peter - try to persuade them... but I couldn't... none of us could. All we could do was watch. We left the theatre in a strange clump that broke off into the street. Nobody talked. Nobody made eye contact. I thought I should go meet up with some friends - but I couldn't right away. I walked for at least an hour. I thought about good theatre. About how it stays with you. About how you miss those shows like old friends... like lovers. Thank you for good theatre. I will miss BUG.
