The Green Youth Arts & Media Center is a creative empowerment hub in Oakland that supports personal, professional, economic, and community development. We serve youth impacted by violence and poverty through innovative programs in the arts, media production, and environmental sustainability.
Vision Statement
The Green Youth Arts & Media Center is dedicated to the transformation of the Bay Area by providing a venue for groundbreaking youth empowerment programs. The Center is a focal point for personal, collective and intergenerational healing fueled by the power of the arts and new media. By creating socially relevant art of all disciplines, we envision an equitable world free of violence.
We believe that urban youth, if supported by a positive, dedicated and creative community, can fulfill their dreams and help lead a movement across the nation for urban revitalization and holistic health. We are dedicated to building one of the most innovative, sustainable and ecologically sound centers for youth in the nation that serves as a replicable model for community rejuvenation.
The Center’s optimal goal is to be a relevant burgeoning coalition of grassroots organizations leading a movement wherein each shall be fully respected and loved, despite difference and marginality.
Programming Description:
At the Oakland Green Youth Media Arts Center we offer a variety of programming to youth ages 13-24 in the Bay Area community. During our start up phase we have been offering basic training in media arts, as well as programming that includes leadership training, environmental justice education and life skills development. On January 18, 2010 the Center will launch expanded programming.
The music program at the Center has both beginner and advanced classes, and supports youth rappers in creating their own compilation CD. There is a rights-of-passage program that includes Hip-Hop education, and teaches youth artists new skills through a cutting edge Reality TV show called The Agency, as well as an on-line internet show called Smash where youth rappers compete for prizes. In the evenings, beginner’s dance classes are offered, youth are invited to participate in Capoiera or join the dance performance crew. Colored Ink offers Urban Theater trainings throughout the week and is working on a full-length play.
Partnering organizations offer a multitude of other projects at the Center. The Urban Peace Movement holds their monthly Block Ambassador youth leadership-training program at the Center, and organizes healing retreats where youth learn to do yoga and meditation. Art in Action offers the Turf Unity music project and Dig this Story! video production weekend-trainings. Grind for the Green has a youth-led green event production team, and organizes green arts festivals. The Community Rejuvination Project holds a weekly graffiti writer’s collective meeting at the center, and trains youth in creating community murals. The Communitree program (a project of Art in Action) teaches monthly trainings on eco-literacy, permaculture gardening and other sustainable practices. The youth staff at the Center are Green Ambassador’s doing green projects that include an eco-hop music project and a documentary film about our green youth center.
