many people don,t know that the first latino barrio was in west oakland from market and 7th st all the way to 7th st and broadway thats were most latinos lived in oakland back then this was from the 1920s till the 1950s many of the first mexican buisneses are still in that area like mexicali rose which opened in 1927 and la borinquena which opened in 1944 the latino community of west oakland began moving to east oakland mainly fruitvale and the san antonio district because of urban renewal . here are some pictures of west oakland latino community that has been long forgotten untill now._____________pachucos of oakland yes the old west oakland barrio had pachucos and there were small zoot suit riots in oakland not as big as the ones in la but they happned here here are some newspaper clippings i found of the pachucos in oakland

cesar chavez the great civil rights leader and farm workers labor leader had many ties to the city of oakland . in fact in his early days of becoming an activist he began with a group called Community Services Organization or cso in the fruitvale area having meetings in st elizabeth church he also joined togheter with oaklands latino community in many protest to open free clinics like la clinica de la raza and to open biliguel schools like la escuelita and centro infantil and against the vietnam war and police brutality . he also spoke at many ralleys in oakland and protested at many safeways stores in oakland during the great grape boycott my mother even met him in oakland back in the 70s at a rally to open up the centro infantil de la raza, and he made many freinds in oakland like mayor ron dellums and former mayor lionel wilson .today his legacy still lives in oakland the cesar chavez library at the fruitvale village also the cesar chavez education center on 29th ave and e14st and cesar chavez park on foothill and 38th ave . the oakland unified school district honor his birthday holiday march 31 by closing all schools si se puede en oakland tambien .
