Who I'd like to meet:
Membership Information
Key Messages
* We've come together to do this because we believe in organic farming, sustainable farming, and community-supported agriculture.
* This is a certified organic farm. Members have even agreed to use non-toxic insect repellents on themselves while working on the farm.
* What are our farmers like? Hardworking, motivated, and committed people who find this rewarding, and who enjoy the challenges (i.e., they're tolerant) of pioneering the processes of a new organization.
* It's very satisfying. We work in the great outdoors, the farm is in a very peaceful location, and you get to pick the fruits of your labor, enjoying the harvest!
* Those interested should contact Marysol or Jean-Pierre.
Memberships
There are three main ways to become a CSA member of Oasis Community Gardens. We are
open to working with and accomodating everyone from all walks of life, so if one of these
membership levels does not fit your lifestyle and we will do our best to work something out.
Contact us to sign up for the CSA membership that’s right for you! Please be patient as we may not respond to your inquiry the same day. Hey, what can
we say? We’re outdoor people!
* Delivery CSA - Here’s a way to have a variety basket of beautiful fresh organic produce dlivered to your home once a week.
The basket includes a variety of vegetables, flowers and fresh herbs (varries seasonally).
Weekly Prices: Small basket $30,Large basket $40 Monthly Prices: Small basket $110,Large basket $150
* Hands-on CSA - Here’s an opportunity to feed your family and get first-hand farm experience. This membership cost is $75/ month plus 8 hours of labor. If you join as a household, everyone’s hours count toward the 8 hour required labor. Farm work is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, breath fresh air, heal mentally, pyscially and spiritually, and be directly involved with the food you and your family eats.
The CSA share will include a large seasonal basket of produce that feeds four including fresh herbs and flowers.
* Volunteer CSA - Here’s a way to sign up to volunteer for a day and go home with some produce. There’s no long-term
committment and if you’re short on cash, it’s a great way to eat organically.
Farm Work
Both Volunteer CSA and Hands-on CSA memberships include labor hours. Farm work varries greatly depending on what part of the season we are in,
weather and the changing needs of the farm. Here’s a list of potential tasks to give you an idea of what to expect.
Weeding! (cultivating) instead of using pesticides is an essential part of organic farming. Planting, harvesting, washing and preparing vegetables are the main
tasks we need help with, but flexibility is an essential part of farm work. Who knows that the weather will bring?
Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water. It’s important to stay hydrated in the Texas sun.
Child Labor Policy
Children under 14 years of age are encouraged to work on the farm with their families but their labor will not count toward their familys labor requirements. We acknowledge that childrens work on the farm can benefit us all, but we would prefer that the children feel that their work is for the love of doing work, learning and being an important part of the community without the pressure of having to fulfill labor requirements.
Bring your friends!
Let's get the message out that there are better ways to eat and get our food - Bring friends and family, they can get a free sample and stroll around and check out the farm. We are currently full, but people can certainly sign up on the waiting list to join.
Bug Repellent That Won't Kill Us Along With The Bugs
There has been some thought about use of insect repellent on the farm. We are trying to keep our crops organic, but if we use chemically based insect repellents to keep those militantly huge mosquitoes off us while we harvest our food, we defeat the purpose of being organic. We are looking for recipes for homemade bug repellent or suggestions for good DEET-free repellent. Some of us are willing to be human test subjects if anyone wants to use us for market research. For now, we will try to keep some homemade type of herbal bug repellent in the mail box for our dedicated workers.
Are Mosquitoes Bugging You? Here's the Secret Solution!
My mother used to be plagued by mosquitoes. If there was one, single mosquito within a mile of her, it seemed to bite her. I wondered, "Why do mosquitoes like her, and not like me?" Then I read a gardening book of old wives tales and new scientific advice. It boasted a secret two-part formula for naturally repelling mosquitoes, swearing by it's ability to deter the little demons. Here's the deceptively simple secret: take Vitamin B complex and don't eat bananas!
I thought it was crazy when I first read it. But it worked like a miracle cure for my mom. I read the article to my mother and we laughed, as she was eating a lot of bananas and she rarely took Vitamin B. She gave up bananas and started taking her vitamins. Skeptic that she was, she had to admit it made a big improvement. She started enjoying the great outdoors much more.
The last two times I've seen Oasis Gardeners pestered by mosquitoes, I've told them about this secret formula. And both times they've confessed that they've just had a banana with breakfast that day. Mere coincidence? You decide!
For those of you who would feel more secure with an external solution to the problem, look for the Natural insect repellent recipes at Stony Mountain Botanical's web site: http://www.bright.net/~herbs4u/insect.htm .
Enjoy the great outdoors!
