Sweet Oblivion presentan su nuevo disco 'Black Sheep Serenade' (Lucinda/Subterfuge/PIAS Spain, 2009)
Sweet Oblivion es el nuevo proyecto de Alfonso Arana, ex componente
de Cujo y de Cancer Moon, acompañado por la aterciopelada voz de Ce Echevarri. Tras su debut en 2007 con 'Wasted Lovesongs', este nuevo
álbum supone la confirmación de Sweet Oblivion gracias a un sonido
lujoso y emocionante, cada vez más personal y atemporal con indudables referencias al rock americano. Un disco repleto de fabulosas canciones guiadas con firmeza por las voces de Ce y de Alfonso y en el que cabe destacar como novedad la incorporación de María Isusi a los teclados,
quien junto a Txema Solano (bajo) y Bruno Zumárraga (batería) aporta
a los temas nuevos matices.
Alfonso Arana, cantante y compositor natural de Getxo (Vizcaya),
con amplia trayectoria musical durante los últimos 15 años, ha formado
parte de bandas como Cancer Moon (1991-1995), o liderado otras como Cujo (1995-2006).
En abril de 2006 forma Sweet Oblivion tomando su nombre del sexto
álbum de estudio del grupo norteamericano Screaming Trees, banda
liderada por el cantante Mark Lanegan. Los puntos fuertes del nuevo proyecto residen en las excelentes composiciones y en el resultado
de la unión de las voces de Ce y de Alfonso.
Ese mismo año graban su primer disco, ‘Wasted Lovesongs’ que publica
en 2007 el sello independiente Noizpop Recordings. En verano de 2008 el grupo regresa a los estudios Tío Pete de Urdúliz (Vizcaya) para registrar
con la ayuda del productor JM Rosillo (Amaral, Sunday Drivers, Tulsa) su nuevo disco para Lucinda/Subterfuge Records, ‘Black Sheep Serenade’ (2009).
La música de Sweet Oblivion, con raíces en el pop-rock americano es,
por encima de todo, evocadora, emocionante y hermosa. En ocasiones
la melancolía y el intimismo ganan la partida (‘For Years To Come’,
‘Lonesome Tonight’, ‘Where The Sun Never Leaves’), en otras son las guitarras y melodías las que deslumbran (‘Dead Time’, ‘One Of A Kind’), mientras que alcanzan un mágico equilibrio en ‘Dyslexic Heart’ ó ‘Black Sheep Serenade’, sin duda dos de las joyas del disco.
BIOGRAPHY
Sweet Oblivion started in 2006 as the new project led by Alfonso Arana, lead guitarist, singer & songwriter of Cujo, one of the best Spanish Indie bands of recent years, which mixed raw guitars with great pop melodies in their own unique way.
Cujo released 4 albums and 3 singles from 1995 until 2006, when they called it quits.
He also played rhythm guitar and sang backing vocals in the early 90’s in Cancer Moon, the seminal and highly underrated rock band from Bilbao.
“Black Sheep Serenade” is their new album, released in 2009 by Lucinda/Subterfuge Records and distributed by PIAS Spain. Recorded at Tío Pete, in Bilbao, and mixed at Audiomatic, in Madrid, in 2008 by JM Rosillo, one of the best pop-rock producers in Spain. In early 2007, the band released their debut, “Wasted Lovesongs” (Noizpop Recordings).
The combination of Ce’s bright & sweet vocals and Alfonso’s deep husky tone, prove to be one of those wonderful dalliances that have come about as pairings in the guise of Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue, Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra, and Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell. The dynamism lies in the duet, and the lyrics here are coloured by a search for redemption with tales of farewells, lost souls, forbidden love and loneliness.
Sweet Oblivion’s music, rooted in the American pop-rock tradition is, above all, exciting, passionate and beautiful. Sometimes it turns melancholic and private (‘For Years To Come’, ‘Lonesome Tonight’, ‘Where The Sun Never Leaves’), sometimes the guitars and the melodies dazzle and inspire (‘Dead Time’, ‘One Of A Kind’), while they reach a magic balance in songs like ‘Dyslexic Heart’ or ‘Black Sheep Serenade’, undoubtedly two of the album’s gems.
As for the songwriting, “Black Sheep Serenade” stands clearly as the finest work Alfonso’s penned to date. An album that confirms Sweet Oblivion as one of the promising new talents in the pop-rock scene.
