In 2005 Mike Fettig, Ji Peterson, and Scott Marsden formed Oblivious Enslavement with the intent to make a "melodic black metal" presence in North Dakota. Soon after, Jim Cherry joined as their vocalist. Later, in early 2006, Wyl Anderson joined the band on bass. From there the band played shows all over ND and eventually released a split demo with another Minot band, Wreck of Nerves. Eventually the momentum slowed resulting in the expulsion of Jim in September 2006. Immediately Ryan Bussiere was appointed as frontman and Wyl took on second vocal duties. Recording of "Beneath the Ashes" was finished in the fall of 2006. Following the release Oblivious Enslavement played a handful of shows before disbanding. The band split in the early summer of 2007.
