About me:
Maybe you read me in a women's studies class. Maybe you saw me in the waiting room at the doctor's office. Maybe your mom sheepishly shoved me into your suitcase as you were packing for college. Maybe you saw women examining their vaginas with mirrors and wondered where they got the idea.
For over 36 years I've helped women make informed choices about their health by providing truthful, straightforward information on everything from sex to body image to reproductive rights. I inspired the women's health movement back in the day. Nowadays I'm still working to break down the barriers of sexual, social, and economic inequalities with my newest edition.
Yeah, these are pretty large barriers to tackle, even if I am over 800 pages long. But now there's a nonprofit named after me! Some of our projects include working with women's groups all over the world to help adapt and me into culturally appropriate formats (ranging from workshops to booklets) to distribute in their communities. Currently, we are working with women in Israel, Nepal, Nigeria, and Turkey, among others.
We also do a lot of outreach to the media to ensure that there is a counterpoint to the distortions and misinformation of commercial interests (We are one of the few women’s health groups in the U.S. that doesn’t accept funds from pharmaceutical companies). To read more about our organization, check out our website here.
And since I can't go more than 10 minutes without providing helpful health information, check out the Our Bodies Ourselves free online resource center for a searchable database of health information, health news, and free excerpts from my chapters by clicking here.
We've also created a women's health blog to keep track of current events--check out some of our postings in our MySpace blog! Stay tuned for more updates!

Recently, Senate Republicans filibustered the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law that would have overturned an appalling Supreme Court decision that practically abolished remedies for gender-based compensation discrimination in the workplace. In opposing this legislation, Senator John McCain said that if women want better-paying jobs, they just need more "education and training." Then, he didn't even show up for the vote.
Let's tell Senator McCain that he should stop blocking an up or down vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act if he wants to ensure equal rights for women under the law.
Thanks for the Add Our Bodies Ourselves We are starting a new HIV Prevention project that will live in Myspace! We just need you to answer a few questions about how you use Myspace and in return we are giving $25 worth of iTunes downloads. Send a message and we'll let you know how to help!

March 10, 2008 National Day of Support of Abortion Providers http://www.refuseandresist.org/ab/index.html
On this day - Stand up with your abortion services providers and say: Thank you for your heroism, perserverance, courage, and commitment to women.
* Praise clinic staff and doctors with cards and letters of appreciation. Let them know they have your support and thanks. * Bring your local clinic staff flowers or a breakfast basket of fruit or muffins. * Organize local appreciation day events. * Organize with others to hold a March 10th dinner with area providers. * Step up to the front lines and be a volunteer clinic escort. * Ask your local provider how you can help. * Write your local newspaper, call talk shows to express support. * Take out ads in your newsletters and local newspapers. * Use your imagination, creativity and dedication to help create a climate at clinics where women, doctors and staff can hold their heads high without feeling shamed or fearing assault.
The National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers was initiated in 1996 and co-sponsored by many national organizations and individuals, as a way to help stop the isolation and create a positive climate for abortion providers across the country. March 10th is the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. David Gunn, the first provider murdered by an anti-abortion extremist. It is a day to remember and honor Dr. Gunn and others who have and continue to put their lives on the line daily to make choice possible. Without abortion providers, there can be no "choice." And without choice women cannot be free to live and plan their lives!
In the shadow of the first federal ban on an abortion procedure and the criminalization of doctors who perform this service for women in need, and with the subsequent federal subpoenas of patient records, it is especially important right now to let providers know we stand with them.
Thank you for including me in your circle of friends...I am honored. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything that I can do to contribute. "...why be an average person? All the great achievements of history have been made by strong individuals who refused to consult statistics or to listen to those who could prove convincingly that what they wanted to do, and in fact ultimately did do, was completely impossible."
~ Eric Butterworth, 20th Century Spiritual Teacher from Spiritual Economics
Love that.
Why be average?
Don’t consult stats or experts.
Follow your heart.
Do what you’re here to do.
