The O-Brothaz Sound System is the first Caribbean sound system based in Taipei, Taiwan. Founded by a group of Selectors from Jamaica and Martinique; Lion, Youngblood and Assassin. With their experience in the Caribbean music business in France, Jamaica and Canada, they decided to promote Caribbean music in Taiwan and SE Asia, by all means necessary. The O-Brothaz provide an opportunity for people of the region to come in contact with Caribbean music such as Reggae, Soca, Zouk, Soukous, Calypso and Dancehall. These kinds of music have been more or less absent in Taiwan and SE Asia or restricted to commercially popular songs (Sean Paul, Beenie man, Shaggy, Bob Marley). The O-Brothaz Sound System plays and operates in the traditional way as do most sound systems throughout the world and have done since the beginning of the sound system days in Jamaica.
The O-Brothaz have been blazing fire in the Taiwan night life by providing upbeat and entertaining sessions in various venues as well as at their own parties such as Firerama which was probably the largest Caribbean music party ever held to date in Taipei with over 500 people in attendance.
O-Brothaz Productions is the record label founded in 2006 by the O-Brothaz and is the first completely foreign-owned record label in Taiwan. The label was started with the goal of being the headquarters for Caribbean music in Taiwan. The label is working to produce beats/riddims and allow a place to develop local artists and foreign artists in the genres of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, R&B, calypso, soca, zouk and dub.
Another goal of the label is to act as a point of contact for Caribbean and other artists to the SE Asian markets who wish to have their music exposed to the region. The label plans to set up and host events that will help to develop and expose Caribbean music in countries such as China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and other SE Asian countries.
