The past is prologue.........In the Spring of 2006 Obsolete Heart spent four days recording a handful of songs at Manny Nieto’s (the Breeders, 400 Blows, the Pity Party) WEATANDDRY recording studio in Eagle Rock, CA. Their days were filled with recording the songs utilizing the beautiful and unforgiving technology of a 2-inch tape machine mixed with live performance takes. Their nights were filled with writing the songs and squatting in an arguably haunted, abandoned house in nearby Burbank.........Upon returning home from the studio with the tracks, the band promptly quit their jobs, and pointed their van north again to Los Angeles. They moved back into the same abandoned house, this time permanently. Their first action being; to push the dust caked couch out into the backyard, and set up their music equipment in the living room. Their second task was to paint over the blood spattered walls. They spent the next year kicking up dust in Los Angeles and touring the western United States, while hashing out the songs that would eventually complete their full-length album..........After finishing their 2007 Fall tour, the band re-entered the studio with Nieto and began recording what would become their most adventurous sessions yet, and the completion of “…and the Devil Makes Three”. The time spent in the studio found the band spending more time “setting the mood”, “finding inspiration”, and getting good tones than actual recording as most of the tracks found on the finished album are first or second takes. With Motown handclaps, fuzzed out guitars, woody snares, slide guitar, moody vocals, old school tape compression and soulful performances by the players,
“…and the Devil Makes Three” is Rock n’ Roll captured raw and real. The album is not a so-called “Concept Album” but due to the methods that were involved in its creation, the songs share common themes and subject matter. The record translates the energy of a pair of young artists coming into their own and confronting what the road ahead is presenting them with, whatever it may be. “…and the Devil Makes Three” is a collection of songs about learning and applying the vices of the city, and the devils you meet along the road that leads there.
