Collectively, Occasional Monster was a indie-ish rock band from Central-ish Ohio. We did not play free bird. We did not wash your dishes, even when you let us crash at your place after a show. We still can't tell you who we sounded like. *Begins to sing "These are a few of our favorite things"*.
Musically, we are commonly described as Alternative, but such a one word description defies the complexity and schizophrenic range that is our hallmark. Frankly, I don't think anyone ever actually described us. I'm sure we'll check this from time to time, so the challenge still stands. We ranged from acoustic folk to heavy music that rode the fence between hard rock and metal. During that journey between extremes, we traversed through other territories including old-school country, jazz, blues, funk, and noise. Sure, we were not the first band to pull off this smashup of genres, but we were among a select few that do it while maintaining equal importance for the art of songcraft. That's something to be proud of, I think. Not all songs were a journey, but you can be assured that you cannot faithfully predict where each new song may go by it’s first thirty seconds, nor it’s first four minutes.
Personally, we still have a progressive bias and a DIY attitude. We did all of our own writing and recording in our rehearsal space/studio. We designed all of our graphics (with some significant help from Stephanie Sherwood), built our website, and manufactured advanced electroshock devices to "discourage" usage of the phrase "get er dun." Ok, so I was kidding about the liberal bias. We poked holes in closed minds.
Individually, we were composed of the following parts:
Bobby Dunkle – Guitar
Dan Sherwood – Guitar and Vocal Chords
Jerod Elder – Bass and Vocal Chords
Michael Knapp - Drums and Cymbals
We are proud to have played with Just Above Jealous, Evan Harris and the Driftwood Motion, Sour Blood, The Wooly Lemons, 7th Cycle, Mullincamp, False Alarm, And 5 Makes 20, Boogie Matrix Mechanism, A Friend Called Fire, Ron Freeman and the Revelators, Nathan Zangmeister, Big Wise, Six or Seven, The Furry Jerks, Tuesday Cried, Go Analog, and GhostMonster.
Listen. Enjoy. Comment if you desire. Thanks. - OM
