OCEAN TRIBE "The Zen of Rock and Roll"
Not since Nirvana's epic 'Nevermind' in 1991 has there been a band with the potential power to change the face of Rock and Roll like Los Angeles' Ocean Tribe. With power, passion, conviction, and the all-important live show, "New Super 70's" rock band Ocean Tribe has it all.
In a time where guitar solos, spontaneity, and spirited anthemic rock music are all but absent from the mainstream, Ocean Tribe have come out of nowhere it seems to burn a new path and destination for Rock and Roll's forging future with their much anticipated full-length debut, "The Zen Of Rock & Roll".
Fronted by the wild powerhouse Tas, the magic and wizardry of guitarist Terry Carter, and the driving rhythm section of Andrew Wessen and Stewbie Beats, Los Angeles' Ocean Tribe are at the forefront of the "New Super 70's" rock movement; combining Classic, Pop, Southern, and Punk of that historic decade into an original, non-retro sound.
Ocean Tribe is a totally new breed of rock and roll, with each new song being totally different from the next. The diversity in the songs is unparalled by today's standards. Rock, Pop, and Country radio have been longing for fresh new music, and this batch of songs has "Multiple Crossover" written all over it. From the album opener, "Desert Song" with its' hypnotizing melodies, tribal drums, and three minute epic guitar solo, and the bombastic Punk feel of "Free", to the Southern Rock and Pop influenced "Simple Man", this band confidently runs the gamut of its' many rock genre influences throughout their twelve track eclectic debut.
"Intense, raw, physical, urgent, and inspiring", are words that have been used to describe Ocean Tribe live, but on their classic debut, the band opted to smooth out its rougher, live-sounding edges with a more polished and radio-friendly sound. "For the album, we wanted a sound that was easier on the ears, but live is where one comes to get the authentic and total experience. And on stage we blast apart the songs!", says the band while being interviewed at their Heartland Studios rehearsal compound in Los Angeles.
Tracks for 'The Zen Of Rock & Roll' were recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini, most known for his work with Nirvana, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Pixies, and Iggy & The Stooges, and at Hollywood's legendary Ocean Way Studios, where The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded. Recording many of the tracks live and in one take, and aided by using vintage amps and guitars, the songs put down on the two inch analog tape reveal a warm, live sounding feel. Bands like today's acclaimed My Morning Jacket and Wolfmother have done the same successfully, but Ocean Tribe seem to have captured this vintage sound without sounding fully retro. Still classic sounding though, each song was produced in a different manner to give listeners a broad spectrum of their dynamic "New Super 70's" sound.
With a rage for creative freedom and expression, every one of the band members in Ocean Tribe has sacrificed something to be playing music together, and it's all for-and-about the music they say, and to give their best to their audience at every show. "Whether Tas is climbing the rafters, or singing amidst the crowd, or Terry is going off on a wild solo; each show and song, is a unique experience unto itself, and it's always up to the four of us to create the power to fill up the room as a band." The goal they say is to reach a point in their live performance where the four members have no thoughts of the past nor future, but musically unite and become present to the music being harnessed, and when they do so, they say an "invisible shockwave" busts out and reaches the audience. This is what they call "The Zen Of Rock & Roll" which the title of their debut reflects. "That is the connection we strive for, it is how we become one, for just that single moment, with the audience."
The word of mouth about Ocean Tribe is traveling faster than they might have expected. "We're in no hurry, the music will flow on its own time and way, says the band. A smiling Tas adds, "Those with ears will hear the music we are playing, and they'll come join us", when asked about how they intend to reach the mass audiences around the world. Ocean Tribe live commands your attention, and the word on the street and in the press is that this band has what it takes to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world. "Both ethereal and driving", is how Grounder describes the Ocean Tribe sound, adding, "The music live is intense, even the more mellow laid-back parts have an urgent explosiveness to them. Seeing the band live that first time made me think of what it must have been like to catch one of the greats before anyone really knew them. 'Desert Song' is the 'Freebird' of the New Millennium!"

OCEAN TRIBE "ZRR"
After working with Nirvana producer Steve Albini for their first album "The Zen of Rock and Roll", LA's Ocean Tribe go Lo-Fi and bring back Album Oriented Rock (AOR) with an original "New Super 70's" rock sound on their 2nd Studio release, the epic 'ZRR', recorded Live in one take on vintage 8 Track.
With the Pacific Ocean surf in the air, California takes its turn once again in breaking new bands and lifestyles to the world, and now again with Ocean Tribe and their epic second release, "ZRR". This time it is all about those who come to experience Ocean Tribe live, to witness four musicians that put their souls on the line for the music and their audience. Live they are unlike any other band you have ever seen before, or will ever see again. Ocean Tribe are keeping it real and alive while paying tribute to their musical heritage and roots with 'ZRR'.
Ocean Tribe had originally created the "New Super 70's" rock sound, taking inspiration from the grandness and melody of that historic musical decade and the great bands that created it, but now with 'ZRR', they deliver the real, down-home goods. Seeing Ocean Tribe live today is a re-discovering of the soul, stoke, and style that made rock music and rock bands radical and rebellious in the first place some decades ago. Together, the four musicians of Ocean Tribe perform a live show that is a no-holds-barred creative expression, a show that is spontaneous and spiritually and emotionally moving and so the time was prime for the band to take a chance on record to capture their live show.
On their second release, 'ZRR', the power and grace of Ocean Tribe's live sound is captured perfectly on tape. Having recorded with indie mastermind Steve Albini for their previous release, it was a no brainer to record again in this "live" manner and to add no effects in the mix sans some classic reverb.
The band recorded with an indie Lo-Fi method on a vintage 70's 8-Track, using only eight microphones to record the instrumentals of the album in one take in one day. The vocals were recorded afterwards, where Tas the singer, in keeping with the spirit of the recording method, used only one microphone to sing the album in one take. There are no back-ups, harmonies, or chorused vocals here, nor are there studio tricks, keyboards, percussion, or acoustic guitars; just a band owning it and capturing that eternal moment.
"ZRR" is as real as it gets with over seventy five minutes of music, and it is not a glossy, over-produced record, and in doing so it sticks out like a shining beacon against all of the "single-friendly" rock records out today. A new precedent has been declared by this band and their "live, not tracked over time" idealogy. Raw, dynamic, and spontaneous, many songs extend over seven minutes and are graced by massive, epic guitar solos that are simply sublime. This album would truly benefit from being heard on vinyl rather than digitally, yet all it takes is one listen to "ZRR", and it is clear what rock and roll was, is, and will always be: urgency, chaos, expression, freedom, and harmony.
