Ocote (o-KOH-tay) Soul Sounds is something new from Martín Perna, creator of ANTIBALAS and frequent TV ON THE RADIO collaborator.
The larger group is a 7+ member ensemble co-directed by Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma while the solo project is at the crossroads of NUEVA CANCION and digital folklore.
The sounds are found at the intersection of the downtown dancefloor, the sweaty basement bembé, and the smoldering campfire on a remote beach. The songs were born on Brooklyn rooftops, Mayan pyramids, and Texas traffic jams. The music carries traces of long-lost corridos of Mexico, echoes of Yoruba godparents, of wistful soul music and Sufi poetry sung behind closed doors, blazing a path of love and mystery.
Outside of music, he is dedicated to the pursuit of alchemy and utopian projects such as biodiesel fuels, community art projects, and superadobe architecture. One recent work is BLACKOUT!, a coloring book which came out August 14, 2006.
