Odarka
This is a video of my song and celtic harp performance on the Folk Project TV show in Late 2008:
Influences
Largely Celtic and Ukrainian music especially the really old stuff, the authors of which are rarely known. I love primitive singing and ancient tradition of all kinds, but especially in music. After that, all the modern musicians too: Leone Paulson, (my harp instructor of many years), Carlos Salzedo, Cat Stevens, Andreas Vollenweider, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Lucinda Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, Robinella, Aideen O'Donnell, Red Reyne:-), Dave Alonso!!!!!, Olya Shevchenko, Marko Kotliar (Where ARE you?), the Italian boys that taught me all those lovely Italian songs (Roma non fa la stupida, etc), the guy that played Trembita at Soyuzivka, Marjana Sadowska, Nina Matvienko, The nice people who taught us Hahilky in the 70s in Newark, my choral instructors at St. John's Ukrainian Catholic School, my Grandmother, Natalia Chaplenko who loved Lemko Folks songs and ANYONE who is brave enough to sing on a BUS! THIS COULD BE YOU!
Most recently Nadia Tarnawsky, at the Ukrainian Women's Voices Project who taught me about all the different resonators in our bodies.. SO cool !!
Sounds Like
Someone said I sound like Sandy Denny, wow! I'd like to sound like Sandy Denny. Tell me what you think- who do I remind you of?
Eclectic Electric Celtic Harpist plays solo, in duo and with a band. You want to learn more? Come see a show! or visit me at www.Odarka.com. I am also a poet and consider that music too. The last few Mp3s posted are usually readings of my poetry.
I would love to meet musicians, artists and poets of all types: especially those that believe in magic, experiment with unusual instruments, or try unusual experiments with the usual instruments, believe in releasing art into the universe and watching what happens.
