ODYSSEY! is the brainchild of Rob Lichter. Rob grew up on Long Island and developed an ear for melody and the ability to easily learn any instrument at an early age. After honing his songwriting skills in experimental rock bands The Bellybuttons and the more popular Binkystick, he slowly started working on his rock opus.
Rob, a huge fan the movie and book "2001: A Space Odyssey", and having grown up with Mad Magazine, saw the potential for Kubrick & Clarke's story to be told in musical parody. He started writing ODYSSEY! in 1997. In 1999 he flew to LA to record with his brother (and previous bandmate) Russell, and hired Dave Simmons to produce the album. The sessions were brutal and exhausting, but fruitful. Rob flew back to NY and worked on more songs while Russ & Dave continued to mix tracks and find guest vocalists to round out the cast.
What was supposed to be a relatively short project took nearly ten years to complete. But now, after much sweat and blood and exhausted energy, ODYSSEY! is ready for the public's ears.
A super-brief clip of a live recording of The Monolith's song is on this week's episode of our pop culture radio show/podcast, THE ACTION ROOM! www.theactionroom.com Cheers to all!
Gah! It is truelly an amazing body of work!!
It's a shame how the intellectual rights business works the Film industry is free to revisit the same trashy plots storylines and situations over and over again because they change the name of the cop buddies or change the look of a spacecraft
Countless bands sound pretty much the same
What this CD did was take two things a great old movie/book and a collection of song forms and came up with something genuinely fresh and funny!
I for one will be making sure more people hear it!(unless you really want me not to!)
ODYSSEY! is performing live in Rockville Center, Long Island at South Side High School. 7 pm, Friday April 27! Be there! Contact us for more details...
