OFELIA'S IS:
- A food pantry
- A thrift shop
- An art gallery
- A performance space
- A network of volunteers
Combined together, those elements comprise what is a movement of like-minded individuals, who seek to better the lives of the people of the greater Bangor area through art and volunteerism.
Currently, Ofelia's physically consists of a food pantry located at 831 Pushaw Road in Glenburn and an administrative office and small gallery located at 9 Central Street Suite 302 in Bangor. At one point, there was a large gallery, performance space and thrift store located at 77 Central Street in Bangor. From May through November of 2007, there were countless events held at that location, including concerts, poetry slams, art openings, dance parties, fundraisers and open mics. Through a very unfortunate series of events (see the blog posting on the events of Oct. 30), that space was taken from Ofelia's - but no matter, as the movement soldiers on, regardless of whether or not we have a permanent home for our myriad events.
Until we find that new home, we are taking the show on the road. Starting in January 2008, Ofelia's and our partner in art, Club Fuzion, located on Franklin Street in Bangor, will offer Thursday night shows featuring the best in local and regional music. We continue to partner with organizations such as the Bangor Art Society and the Bridge Alliance to provide art and community events, such as November's successful silent art auction. Future plans include the return of poetry night and more shows at the Bangor Opera House and at Well Forms in Brewer. And we're always working on finding a new home, where we can bring our music, art and other cultural events, as well as the thrift shop, back into one cohesive whole.
In the meantime, Ofelia's always needs volunteers, resources and energy. Feel free to stop by the Central Street office and chat with directors Sergio Ramos and Blake Manz, and come back to this site often for updates on upcoming events. We believe in Bangor, and we believe in you. Thank you!
