Country Music Legend Charlie Louvin Dies at 83 Charlie Louvin, who, along with his brother Ira, influenced generations of country and rock performers from Dwight Yoakam and Emmylou Harris to The Raconteurs and Uncle Tupelo, has died from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 83. Charlie's wife Betty, to whom he had been married for 61 years, confirmed to Nashville's WSM radio that Charlie passed away at around 1:30AM on Wednesday. In July, Charlie announced he was battling stage 2 pancreatic cancer for which he underwent surgery at Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Two of our favorite Louvin Brothers classics, 'The Christian Life' and 'The Great Atomic Power': On Charlie's official website, his son, Sonny Louvin, reported that while his father had returned home from the hospital on July 30, "the surgery did not go as planned and he [would] begin using alternative methods of treatment going forward." Born Charlie Elzer Loudermilk in 1927, Charlie grew up in the Sand Mountain region of Alabama, working beside his brother in the cotton mills and fields. The Louvin Brothers' distinct close harmony style developed when the duo began singing together as teenagers. They went from performing at a small radio station in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry where they became Opry members in 1955. Their first big hit, 'When I Stop Dreaming,' reached the Top 10 on the country charts that same year, and the duo toured with Elvis Presley as their opening act. Hits that followed included 'I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby,' 'The Christian Life,' 'You're Running Wild' and 'Knoxville Girl.' The duo disbanded in 1963, with Ira releasing a solo album in 1964. He died a year later in a car crash. Charlie's solo career also began in 1964, with 'I Don't Love You Anymore' being his first Top 5 hit beyond the Louvin Brothers. Other hits included 'I Think I'll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself to Sleep,' 'Less and Less' and 'Off and On.' The term "living legend" gets thrown around quite a bit, but it actually applies to Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin. The magical harmonies and depth of feeling found on Louvin Brothers recordings of the 50's and 60's inspired a new generation of musicians, firmly establishing the Louvins' stature as one of the most influential duos in country music history. In 2006, the Tompkins Square label reached out to Charlie about making his first new studio album in over ten years. They enlisted Mark Nevers, who engineered sessions for many top country artists, and produced Calexico, Lambchop, Candi Staton among others. Guests on the album include Elvis Costello, George Jones, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, Tift Merritt, Marty Stuart, Bobby Bare Sr., David Kilgour, members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, Clem Snide, Superchunk and more. Louvin enjoyed the experience. "Mark Nevers is one of the best engineers I've ever worked with. My brother and I cut our teeth on some of those old songs and they influenced us tremendously. I'm glad we're able to remind people of them."Charlie was born July 7, 1927 in Henager, Alabama. He and his older brother Ira worked as field hands on the family farm. In the evening, they would listen to the country hits of the day on their father's Victrola. Inspired by the tight-harmony duets of The Delmore Brothers, Monroe Brothers and Blue Sky Boys, the brothers began developing a distinctive style called "shape note singing" based on gospel harmonies they had learned in church. The duo nailed down steady work in the 40's on local radio stations in Knoxville and Memphis. They also toured heavily in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee during this period. On one swing through Dyess, Arkansas, Charlie remembers an encounter with a teenager named Johnny Cash. "We were playing with Eddie Hill. I was selling tickets and I saw this young man standing outside alone. I asked him to show me where the bathroom was. As we walked back, he noticed I had two soda crackers in my shirt pocket. He asked me why, and I said, 'To keep from starving to death.' I invited him in to the show I could tell he didn't have any money. Years later in his book (Man In Black, 1975), he said he always ate two soda crackers before he went on stage." Cash also recalls the date in an intro to his version of the Louvin's "When I Stop Dreaming" on the recent Columbia/Legacy release, Personal File. The Louvins scored their first record deal with Apollo in 1947, released a single on Decca in 1949, and recorded 12 sides for MGM in 1951 and 1952. One of those sessions took place with Hank Williams waiting outside for his turn in the studio. Their recording and performing schedule was sporadic due to Charlie's military service during the Korean War. Upon his return to the States, they began recording for Capitol Records, which remained their label home until the brothers parted ways in 1963. Marking a shift from gospel to secular material, the Louvins scored their commercial breakthrough in 1955 with the top ten hit "When I Stop Dreaming." They toured in early 1955 with soon-to-be superstar Elvis Presley as their opening act, and became members of the Grand Ole Opry. From 1955 through 1962, the Louvin Brothers churned out 12 hits on the Billboard country chart, including "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby," "You're Running Wild," "Cash On The Barrelhead" and "Knoxville Girl." Although the Louvins hit machine had slowed by the early 60's, they instead created a string of themed albums, cult favorites that still resonate with today's alt-country audience, including A Tribute to the Delmore Brothers and Satan Is Real. By 1963, with a shifting marketplace and interpersonal tensions mounting, the Louvin Brothers parted ways. Ira released his lone solo album, The Unforgettable Ira Louvin, in 1964. He died in a car crash in Missouri on June 20, 1965.Charlie's solo career began in 1964 with the top five hit "I Don't Love You Anymore," and he followed it with six Billboard-charting singles from 12 Capitol LPs. By the late 60's, a renewed interest in the music of the Louvin Brothers began to take shape. The Louvins' continued legacy is at least partly attributed to Gram Parsons, who, according to legend, paid people to scour LA record shops looking for their out-of-print sides. His versions of Louvins classics "The Christian Life" from the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, or "Cash on the Barrelhead" from Grevious Angel, serve as the blueprint for so much "alt-country" that was to follow. Emmylou Harris' first hit was the Louvins' "If I Could Only Win Your Love." Uncle Tupelo covered "Great Atomic Power" on their third album, March 16-20, 1992. "The Christian Life" has been worked into The Raconteurs' live set recently. The Louvin Brothers were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2001. In 2003, Charlie was invited to open on a national tour with Cheap Trick and Cake. That year also saw the release of Livin', Lovin' Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers on Universal South, a Louvin Brothers tribute album featuring James Taylor, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash among others. The collection went on to win two Grammy Awards in 2004. .. ........ .. ............Myspace Layouts.. - ..Myspace Editor.. - ..Image Hosting.... ...... ...... Charlie Louvin 1927 – 2011, Music Pioneer! With the passing of Charlie Louvin, the world has lost more than a musical pioneer and gifted showman; we have lost one of the kindest souls I've had the pleasure to have known. Everyone who knew Charlie knew what a giving man he was, but when you put all of the personal stories together, it adds up to far beyond what one might have imagined. He had even gone as far as borrowing money from the bank to lend to a friend in need. Charlie was at any benefit, that he was asked to perform at,for friend or stranger; even when it cost him a paying gig, which it often did. When a friend of his was unable to put food on the table, Charlie was by every week with groceries for this man's family. He mowed many a lawn for bereaved families that had recently lost a loved one. He believed in helping in small ways whenever he had the opportunity. He was always collecting soda tabs for Ronald McDonald house wherever he was, though it meant picking through garbage to get to them many times. He was a very humble man who was true to his roots in both music and life. And he was a man of his word; a hand-shake meant as much to him as a signed contract. Charlie stuck to his guns throughout his career; this choice did not always make him the most popular singer in the industry. He was a Legend in his own time, even though this means little to the Country Music coats and ties of today, who appreciate a quick buck much more than talent. Charlie was a warm-hearted fellow who was always quick with a joke. He was a great storyteller. This man had a great love for life and kept his sense of humor to the end. Charlie's warm smile will be greatly missed, as will his continued musical contributions. He was called to be a man of music, but he always left room to be a man of God. JuddFilms and Neltner Creative Direct Film/DVD for Charlie Entitled "Still Rattlin' the Devil's Cage" The project is funded via kickstarter.com, an online creative forum for folks/fans to donate to projects. The team raised a $3K+ production budget to cover hard costs for travel as well as produce 1K DVD's for Charlie to sell on tour and right here on his site. The entire creative team, is donating their services, Judd/Neltner, Brian Steege(Director of Photography), Milk Products (editing), Jeff Chamber (screenwriting) to help Charlie raise money for medical expenses. The crew has filmed Charlie's 50th Anniversary show of "Satan is Real" Dec. 3 at the Foobar in Nashville and conducted an interview at his home. Special guests will be announced when filming continues in Nashville in Jan. We'll be keeping you posted here and the tentative release date is Spring '11. In the mean time you can pick up one of Keith Neltner's prints that commemorated the night and will be featured in the film. www.neltnercreative.com All proceeds will go to the film's production costs. Conversation Between Charlie and Kris Kristofferson: Charlie Louvin (left) and Kris Kristofferson at the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee, January 27, 2010. Photo courtesy of Sonny Louvin. On May 11, Light In The Attic will release its 50th title, a project that was over five years in the making. Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends: The Publishing Demos 1968-72 is a collection of the early demos of Kris Kristofferson, and our anticipation is ratcheting to levels bordering on mania. The good people at NPR are streaming the album in its entirety, and we highly recommend you stop by their site for a listen. As part of the run-up to the release date, we're also attempting to put into some context how important a figure Kristofferson is within the framework of modern American music. The above photo is as good a place as any to begin. Charlie Louvin, along with his brother Ira, are country music luminaries. Kristofferson and Charlie Louvin are old friends. At one time in the 1960s, Kristofferson worked as a janitor at Columbia Studios in Nashville, and Louvin would eventually become the first artist to record a Kristofferson-penned song. In January, the men had a wide-ranging phone conversation, and graciously allowed it to be recorded. The text of the conversation can be found in the latest edition of the Light In the Attic magazine. Below is the recording of their talk, which runs a little over 17 minutes. A special thanks to Mark Maxwell at KPFK in Los Angeles for recording the conversation. Update on Charlie's Surgery: To everyone who has been concerned about Charlie Louvin, his surgery and his recovery, the following is an update from his son, Sonny Louvin. Dad came home from the hospital on July 30. The surgery did not go as planned. He will begin using alternative methods of treatment, going forward. He is home recuperating and gaining back his strength. He is in great spirits, looking forward to singing again, and especially Hosting the Midnight Jamboree on Aug. 21st. Please continue to keep him in your prayers and prayer lines, asking the Good Lord to bless him with a speedy recovery. Charlie Wrestles Pancreatic Cancer: As Charlie Louvin turns 83 this July, he is discovering a new foe. He recently went in to see the doctor with what seemed to be a minor complaint, and came back with a diagnosis of stage 2 pancreatic cancer. Suddenly, the success of his soon-to-be-released, new CD is not nearly as important as Charlie's victory over one of the most virulent forms of cancer. He has been through a lot in his 83 years, but this hurdle is one he was not counting on. On July 22nd, Charlie will go in for a complex, six hour surgery at the Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. It's called the Whipple Procedure. Charlie's family and friends are encouraged that he will be in good hands, but they definitely covet your prayers. Charlie's Performance Schedule: Of course, Charlie won't be able to perform for a few weeks after his surgery, but, being the resolute, tough guy that he is, he tentatively hopes he can be back on stage by August 21st, 2010. The Official Charlie Louvin Website URL has been Changed to ..www.charlielouvin.net .. Please Come Visit our site anytime for Updated Info! ...... ...... New CD - The Battle's Rage On - Comming Soon! The Battles Rage On is a sweeping and emotional collection of war songs dating back to the American Civil War, and includes the talents of special guests Del McCoury and Jamie Dailey. Louvin, a Country Music Hall of Famer, is revered as a true icon of country music. He began his career as one half of The Louvin Brothers, and has released nearly 20 albums spanning over four decades. His music has influenced such acclaimed artists as Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, and The Raconteurs. In 2004, Livin', Lovin' Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers a musical tribute to the Louvin Brothers featuring James Taylor, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash won two GRAMMY® Awards for Best Country Album and, Best Country Collaboration. ...... ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE: Charlie Louvin 'Steps To Heaven' - Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album. We are Proud to Announce Charlies 2008 Release "Steps To Heaven" has been Nominated for a Grammy Award! Congratulations Charlie! ...... Charlie Louvin: .. Country Music Hall of Famer and half of the legendary country duo The Louvin Brothers, Charlie Louvin will release two new albums on New York City's Tompkins Square label. Steps to Heaven, due September 16th, 2008, features ten traditional gospel classics including two Louvin Brothers songs. The release will be followed by Charlie Louvin Sings Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, out December 9, 2008. Both albums were produced, recorded and mixed by Mark Nevers (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Andrew Bird, Bobby Bare Sr.) Instead of hanging back at age 80, Charlie has instead chosen to challenge himself. Steps to Heaven was recorded live with a gospel choir comprised of three sisters, journeyman gospel pianist Derrick Lee, and Chris Scruggs adding doghouse bass and electric guitar. Louvin had never recorded with black gospel musicians before, and in doing so discovered a new musical path. "I did things on the gospel record I had no idea I could do. I'd be thinking along the way, 'How can I do things I've never done before?' And I did it." Although some might be surprised at a thematic Charlie Louvin album dealing with death and destruction, one needn't look any further than the very first Louvin Brothers album to find a connection. Tragic Songs of Life, released in 1956, is full of emotional songs detailing heartbreak, betrayal, violence and loss. Inspired by Tompkins Square's recent Grammy-nominated 3CD box set People Take Warning! Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913-1938, Charlie reached back for a couple of songs from that first Louvins album, and pulled nine songs from the box set to create a moving and sometimes raucous new take on traditional songs of tragedy.
