Jay-J, born as Gwen Dhanis in Hamme (Belgium), on November 20th 1984, always had a passion for music. Yet, when he was a teenager, Jay-J never imagined ever playing a part in this unreachable universe of glamour and fame.
During studies Jay-J decided to focus on a second passion: becoming a Chef de cuisine.
After learning the ropes, Jay-J graduated in 2003, and immediately started his career in a Belgian restaurant, working day and night to accomplish his dream. In order to improve and broaden his cooking-skills, he decided to move to Italy, where he managed to win a culinary award.
A few years later Jay-J was offered to become a Chef in France: the place to be for haute cuisine.
Once this mission accomplished, Jay-J returned to Belgium and started working in a friend’s restaurant.
After a few months in Belgium Jay-J followed a comrade’s advice and participated in a Belgian contest called ‘Mister Vlaanderen'.
During this contest, Jay-J fired up a passion that had never abandoned him: music, and the joy of performing as a singer on stage. He started to practice his skills during his leisure time. Jay-J tried to learn as much as he could from legendary artists such as Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and temporary artists such as Ne-Yo, Justin Timberlake and many other great singers and performers.
In Februari 2009, Absolute P management and Mtv Belgium aired a trailer for a new reality show. 'The Project’ was set up to discover a new and potentially ‘hot’ R&B star. This offered Jay-J a first real opportunity to prove himself in the music business. He didn’t hesitate very long…
The Project wasn't just another singing contest, but a hard school in the process of becoming a real artist.
Manager Peter Muls organised a business trip to Konvict Muzik (Akon's label), where it soon became very clear that Jay-J had the best chances to win The Project.
Jay-J stood out during the show, not only for being a great singer, but also for his generous personality and his reliability. He never gave up and always proved having the spirit to make it. Megastar Akon himself congratulated Jay-J’s excellent mentality and talent.
In March 2009 Jay-J signed his first record and management deal. On June 12th 2009, he released his first single ‘Body to Body’, including a big budget video. Body to Body became an instant hit in Europe, and gave Jay-J the opportunity to travel to France, Poland, Spain, etc., in order to promote his music. Body To Body confirmed Jay-J as the first Belgian R&B Superstar, with passionately screaming fans, wherever he went.
In September 2009, Jay-J's first single "Body to Body" resulted in three nominations for the Mtv Belgium Music Awards : Best Urban , Best Male and Best New Artist. Jay-J also performed that night on the show, together with his friends Qwes and Tariq L (Konvict Muzik). During this great collective performance, Jay-J’s 2nd single was introduced : ‘Hold On Tight’. It gave Jay-J the chance to sing the chorus together with Akon…! Indeed, during Jay-J’s first ever meeting with Akon, this world class artist gave three young and upcoming artists the advice to never give up and "Hold On Tight", because it would only be a matter of time before they would be successful too. Very inspiring words, coming from one of the greatest urban artists on this planet !
Hold On Tight was released on November 13th 2009. One week later, already, it conquered the 23th spot in the European Billboard charts Top 50! Jay-J is now preparing his full debut album, set to be released worldwide in 2010.
