We are the official Little House on the Prairie historical site located near Independence Kansas. Visitors can literally walk in the shadows of a pioneer family whose wholesome values became the fabric of one of America's most beloved novels.
The Little House on the Prairie historic site includes a replica one-room cabin that is similar in size and shape to the crudely-built cabin used by the Ingalls family in the book "Little House on the Prairie" by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The site also includes the one-room Sunny Side School that was used from 1872-1947. The restored schoolhouse is charmed with a period potbelly stove that would have been used by young school children and school marms of the pioneer era.
The site also features the post offfice that served the residents of nearby Wayside Kansas, from the turn of century to the mid 1970's. In that quaint post office, visitors can see the postal window along with the mailboxes that opened the world to people who lived on the remote Kansas prairie.
Be sure to join us for the Prairie Days Festival - a day to celebrate life as it was in the 1870s. Enjoy music, games, wagonrides, food, re-enactiments, cowboy poets, period craftsment and live performances. Held the second Saturday each June.
We also had our second annual "Blue Grass on the Prairie Festival" last fall. Lots of great Blue Grass music as well as special guests, games and food.
Little House on the Prairie is located 13 miles southwest of Independence, Kansas, just off U.S. Highway 75. Follow the brown and white historical Markers.
