Ronnie was born in 1953 in Liverpool, into a musical family, his father a band leader, his mother a singer. .. Having settled in London, Ronnie attended a theatre school. Living nearby, another young musician, Phil Collins, attended a similar school. They met through a friend and recognising their mutual passion for music, they decided to set up their own group. It was the mid sixties and Ronnie left school at fifteen to concentrate on his passion for the guitar... .. He moved in with Phil and the two of them formed part of the group Hickory: Ronnie Caryl (Bass, Guitar, Vocals) Brian Chatton (Keyboard, Vocals) Phil Collins (Drum, Percussion, Vocals) and Gordon ”Flash ”Smith (Guitar, Vocals). .. After a short time, the group was re-named Flaming Youth, and was signed under the Fontana record label. Their album “Ark 2” was selected as album of the month by the famous British music magazine “Melody Maker” and the single that was released, ”Guide me Orion” stayed in the British charts for several weeks ... Despite having played at the well known Marquee Club, the London Planetarium, TV appearances in Germany and Holland and tours of England and Spain, the rapid success of the group eventually fizzled out…... .. This was why Ronnie and Phil auditioned for the up-coming group Genesis, who wanted to increase their range. After having auditioned at Peter Gabriel’s home, Phil got the job as drummer, whereas Ronnie’s guitar style was considered more bluesy than progressive.. .. After the Genesis episode, Ronnie was involved with several musical projects, one being the London based musical “ Shoot Up at Elbow Creek “ , and then, in 1972, he formed the group Sanctuary, releasing in 1974 an album where a certain Phil Collins sang harmony. Sadly, this album never saw the light of day, remaining under wraps in the archives of a well known record company... .. 1973 was to see the start of a jamming band, “Zox and the Radar Boys”, where Ronnie would play with well known musicians such as Peter Banks (ex-guitarist with Yes ), Mike Piggot (jazz violinist ) and Phil Collins who, at the time, was drumming with the jazz/rock group, Brand X... In 1974, Ronnie and Phil started working with their longtime friend David Hentschel,(Genesis producer, “Trick of the tail”, 1976, to “Duke”, 1980), on David’s solo album “Startling Music”, remakes of Ringo Starr’s album “Photograph” and which was one of the first to feature the synthesizer. Ronnie and Phil were brought in to play “real” instruments on the album, which was recorded at Ringo’s studio in Ascot. .. The following year the three of them worked with another friend, the hugely talented Irish singer, Eugene Wallace, on his album “Dangerous”... .. In 1976 Ronnie worked for six months on the liner the QE2 and in 1977 took part in the well known musical “Elvis”, which led to a dozen rock and roll shows (“Oh Boy!”, “Let’s Rock!”) which were shown as far afield as the US and Australia. In the same year he played on the track “Letter to France” recorded by Michel Polnareff and produced by David Hentschel... .. In the late 70s/early 80s Ronnie continued the TV/stage/session work and through 1981-3 worked in Lulu’s touring and recording band, having two successful albums in the US and various tours, including one with the Beach Boys... .. In 1983 Ronnie recorded two of his own compositions, “How can it be right “ and “ You got it” under the Polydor Records label, and in 1984 worked with Mik Kaminski ( violinist with ELO)... .. In 1985 Ronnie had the privilege to be invited to play with his some of his idols, namely Eric Clapton, Andy Fairweather Low and Gary Brooker (Procul Harum), at a charity concert near Guildford. A year later he took part in the highly successful TV series “Tutti Frutti”, starring Emma Thompson, and then in 1987 he started a long collaboration with singer/comedian John Otway... .. 1988 saw more studio work, this time with Stephen Bishop, writer of “Separate Lives,” on his new album. In 1992-3 Ronnie was one of the stars of the West End and touring musical “Good Rocking Tonite”, but still found time to record his first solo album “Leave a light on”, with the participation of Phil Collins, Neil Drinkwater, Preston Ross Heyman, David Hentschel and Charles Marling (who co-wrote some of the songs)... .. In 1994, with the keyboard player Neil Drinkwater, Ronnie joined the world touring group” Free the Spirit” which finished with a BBC TV show... .. 1995 saw a change of life, moving to France, and in 1996 he was asked to play rhythm guitar on Phil Collins’ new album “Dance into the light”, from which followed two world tours, a DVD of “Live and loose in Paris” recorded at Bercy in 1997, promotional tours for “Tarzan”1999, “Brother Bear”2003 and “Testify”2002, and also recording a radio show for the French station RTL2 in duo with Phil Collins... .. Ronnie followed this with his own concerts, where he worked with local French musicians, playing both Ronnie’s original compositions and paying homage to his favourite artists, such as Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Sting, the Beatles and many others... .. In 2002, Ronnie recorded his second album “One step at a time”, once again with the collaboration of Phil Collins,( on the track “How can it be right”), and it was released in 2003. .. .. In April 2004 Ronnie played in Bordeaux for the first time, on stage in “Beatles Days”, before going on tour in June with the Phil Collins “First Farewell Tour”(available on DVD), playing in Europe and the East... .. In 2005/6, Ronnie played in summer festivals and some of the big clubs in SW France, and in November 2006, returned to Bordeaux to appear at the Satin Doll... .. 2007 saw more concerts, festivals and preparation for a third album and tour…... .. 2009...the story doesn't end and Ronnie is ready to tour.. .. .. ... .. ..
