About me:

OFFLINE is urban75's FREE club night in several venues in Brixton and south London (and occasionally New York), offering a lively and eclectic bill of great bands, DJs, performers, poets, stand up, acoustic acts and more.

WHAT WE DO:

The events take on different formats - sometimes we have a full night of cabaret and live acts, other nights it's a DJ mash-up - but whatever we've got going on it's always friendly, totally free and a whole load of fun!

Despite a budget of zero, our club nights have has attracted some big live acts, including top comic ROB NEWMAN (Newman & Baddiel), STEWART LEE and RICHARD HERRING (TV's 'Lee & Herring' show), JOSIE LONG, HOWARD MARKS ("Mr Nice"), SHAZIA MIRZA, ROBIN INCE, Mercury Prize nominees THE PORTICO QUARTET, DARREN HAYMAN (Hefner) SIMON DONALD (Viz), BBC6 DJ/new wave star TOM ROBINSON (TRB), JIM BOB (Carter USM), TV SMITH (the Adverts), THE THIRST and GINA BIRCH (The Raincoats).

The night also features a regular cabaret bill of political stand-up, spoken word and poetry along with a shedload of DJs playing an eclectic mix of music from post-punk to Motown to indie to ska to dance .

We've also had all-girl 60s dance troupes, drum and bass samba bands with 45 drummers, beat box artists, country bands, rap, book readings, festival film showings, activist videos, card tricks, and, err, a Human Fruit Machine - it's a bit like a micro free festival with artists playing short sets in front of busy, lively and appreciative crowds in the heart of downtown Brixton.

LONDONIST REVIEW
...like someone's friendly house party opened up to the general public....Entertaining, friendly, and free. What more do you actually want from a night out?"

RICHARD HERRING SPEAKS!
Richard Herring wrote a review of his Offline gig in his blog. I think he describes what the night is about better than we can!

"Last night I played at Offline....

It's an evening of poetry, bands and comedy in the back room of a pub, where entry is free and where acts get paid with two beers. It's a bit anarchic and ramshackle, but a really great night out. I saw a poet with a furious scattergun delivery and a musical act in which a woman played a hurdy-gurdy (which isn't something you see every day).

You should support this place if you are local enough to get down there. There's a great atmosphere and it's free and better than watching two eccentric academics discussing their careers. I thought I would struggle a bit in my set, as I was going on late and was the only comedian and the audience was drunk and I was on my fourth pint of Guinness, but although there were some dodgy moments and I couldn't really see anyone, it was raw and exciting.

One man bought me a whisky to down in one and another after hearing my story about the Hand Job centre, slithered his way up on to the high stage (I compared him to Tooms from the first series of the X Files which had a surprising level of recognition from the crowd) to tell a story of his "friend" who had fallen asleep on a bus and then woken up to find himself being masturbated by a stranger.

We then had a dialogue, passing the microphone from one to the other as we discussed whether his interruption was relevant or appropriate. It was a really lovely bit of fun, very good natured and experimental and after a few exchanges he slinked off again. A terrific night of fun. Do go to the next one."
