Oh Sevenine (pronounced oh seven-een) has its origins in a couple of Essex-based bands that never quite got off the ground: First of all, Lunacy Booth, which brought together Matt (who was playing guitar) and former Oh Sevenine member Ben (bass). After Lunacy Booth disintegrated, Matt and Ben continued to jam together, with Ben switching to his first instrument, guitar.
A prolific song-writing period followed which saw the collaboration begin to take the shape of what was soon to become Oh Sevenine. Armed with a whole load of new songs, Matt and Ben approached Ben's then flatmate Nat to play bass and the original line-up was complete.
The original principle of the band was essentially a low-fi approach, meaning Oh Sevenine's songs should be playable, and enjoyable, even if performed acoustically and without effects in someone's living room.
A year of song-writing, jamming and occasional low-key gigging followed, but just as things seemed to be heading in a productive direction, inevitably the wheels came off and disagreements saw Oh Sevenine disband.
Just as the collapse of Lunacy Booth bore fruit, so too did this temporary disbandment. While Ben returned to his punk roots with his old band Cruiser, Matt and Nat continued to jam and in early 2004 recruited Mike to play guitar. Mike had been a singer and guitarist with Happy Assassins, together with Nat and Oom guitarist Alex (see Friends list), and the modern line-up of Oh Sevenine was born.
No sooner had Mike been drafted in than he headed off to New Zealand travelling for the summer. Armed with a tape of demos, he used that time to familiarise himself with the new songs and write his own parts. Meanwhile, back in the UK, Nat and Matt continued to jam and write a number of basslines etc to accompany Matt's new material. On Mike's return, the first proper rehearsal showed the band they were onto something, with everything slotting into place perfectly.
Working hard to polish up a strong set list, and with Mike's songwriting skills also on board Oh Sevenine soon took the decision to invite jet-setting former Happy Assassins and Cruiser drum wizard John on board. Oh Sevenine had never before had a drummer involved, and with John more used to metal and punk bands, it was an interesting proposition. John joined in September 2005 and regular rehearsals saw him quickly get to grips with the set.
Unfortunately John's studies took him away to India for the first half of 2006, before Oh Sevenine were able to record new demos to include drum tracks - while in India, John developed a circus skills charity concept with a friend which subsequently became a plan which secured funding on his return to the UK, and thus the drumming dream was shelved in favour of a very worthy cause.
Oh Sevenine have therefore returned to their acoustic roots and are getting out there - 2007 is set to be the year of the live show!
The four tracks here are acoustic numbers recorded on a faily basic Cubase set-up in Matt's bedroom. Sound engineers we are not, but please have a listen, enjoy, and let us know what you think!
