Ojo is 6 friends that make sprawling improvisational joints, with 808s, basses, guitars, synths, salts, and any other instrumentations they see fit. Or. Ojo conducts/instigates/leads audience participatory music, that melts the line between audience and band. These performances utilize communal sounds that the audience can make without instruments, like: clapping, chanting, singing, etc…
Ojo was formed in 2005 by Joshua Aster, Justin Cole and Eamon Ore-Giron, Moises Medina, Chris Avitabile and Brenna Youngblood over a love of music, art and improvisation.
Ojo has created audience participatory projects for Esthetics as a Second Language, Queens Nails Annex, The Armand Hammer Museum, LAXART, Bank Gallery, The A+D Museum, Sundown Salon (as Los Cremators), Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles as part of their “Engagement Party” series.
The "live" recording from Ojo’s LAXART performance, Passin' Thru The New Amazing, is finally here and on colored vinyl! You can order one at: www.laxart.org or from Printed Matter in NYC. The colors vary so each one is a surprise. It features the recording from the show and remixes by The Collapsible Mammals and Los Cremators (aka DJ Lengua).
Ojo’s music has been played on WFMU in NYC and included on compilations by Redacted Records and Toshok Labs. They've also played live on KXLU in LA and filmed 2 episodes of Let's Paint TV, which aired in May, 2006 on LA Public Access: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UozcevsVNkw).
Ojo has produced 3 other albums: Ojo in 2005 documenting the band as a 3 piece creating one long improvisational work with turntables, keys, and acoustic guitars. Their second album, Live at ESL Projects (2006), documents their live performance of audience participatory music at the space and features a remix by Nate Harrison. Live at ESL Projects was produced by the artist, James Welling (Sonic Youth’s Bad Moon Rising record cover). Their third album, EP (2006), captures Ojo again as a 3 piece, creating short acoustic guitar songs that have been edited down from longer studio recordings. All 3 albums were self produced and all are currently out of print.
More information about Ojo can be found at www.myspace.com/ojobandojo, laxart.org and moca.org/party.
