"Insistent but uncluttered, not 'single-genre', but inclining to 'minimalism.'...Combines elegance and a non-shouting edginess" - Doug Spencer, Weekend Planet ABC Radio National
OK OK OK is a trio of like minded musicians who, when faced with the problem of replacing their drummer who left for a tour to the sunnier shores of Turkey, instead restructured, reworked and created a new sound. Who would have thought that the smooth enveloping sound of a grand piano (played by Sophia Exiner), the spikyness of a telecaster electric guitar (played by Joshua Teicher) and the warmth of a double bass (played by Josh Holt) would meld so well together? The space created by the absence of a drum kit allows the individual textures of their instruments to resonate and interact to create a fresh, original sound.
The group were awarded the Alan C Rose Memorial Award in 2007, which has enabled them to record their debut full length album. They have just come out of a week in the studio, recording with producer/engineer Joe Talia, equally know for his work as Andrea Keller's drummer as he is for his groundbreaking electronic projects. The album features the sublime vocal stylings of Rebecca Ari on two tracks. She was most recently heard on Jackson Jackson's latest album.
Taking their cues just as much from jazz luminaries Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Wayne Shorter as French Impressionist composers Eric Satie and Debussy with a bit of British composer/producer extraordinaire Brian Eno on the side, the trio capture the broad brushstroke of a film score together with lashings of playfulness, humour, art and improvisation. They have also been heavily influenced by the local Melbourne scene and the interaction of their own diverse interests and backgrounds. Sophia has most recently been studying with Paul Grabowsky. When not playing in OK OK OK Josh Teicher is fronting his electro-rock outfit Video Day. Josh Holt combined his love of classical and jazz music during his studies at VCA and is now a sought after bassist in many styles.
OK OK OK performed at the 2008 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, the 2008 Eltham Jazz and Blues Heritage festival, and have performed at a number of venues across Melbourne, including the Paris Cat Jazz Club, Lebowski’s at café 303, Bar Open in Brunswick St and Scarlette Jazz Club in Smith St.
