Glasgow sunsets. Sweaty venues. Pretend-fancy beers. Good times.
Older and Far Away are now sadly no more but look out for news here of the new musical projects of Caroline, Stew, Mark and Marie.
After spending several years adding cello to various line-ups (including Mogwai, Pilotcan, Cruiser and The Zephyrs), Caroline decided to form her own band. She and Stewart, the genial editor of Beard Magazine, started playing music together in 2005. After their first gig in Mono in February 2006, Mark (who'd hardly touched an instrument in 6 years, but was keen to rediscover his soul) joined on bass, Kev joined on lap steel (but later left for the baubles of London) and the band was completed in September 2006 when Marie (formerly of Tibi Lubin, amongst others) played her first gig as drum-hitter. They were fully formed, and a band in love with twisted country and epic folk.
If you're here to listen to the songs, please know that the demos up there are quite old, a bit anaemic and not terribly representative of how we sound these days. Hey, we're working on it.
'And then the band begin: strings, a little guitar, haunting female vocals. You think you’ve got the measure of them, but wait! The drums roll, the bass kicks in, these songs are not as fragile as they appear. It’s the end of some heartbreaking piece of indie cinema ... This is the soundtrack to your life: comforting, familiar and always present. And you smile, because hearts heal over and you’ll always have the music.
Roll credits.' Last Year's Girl
'So many of these laid-back country bands are content to go through the motions and play safe, but OAFA blend a bit of Pavementesque trickery with good old-fashioned blues emotion to make a very pleasant racket ... definitely worth watching again' Last Night From Glasgow Indie Eye Spy
