I am Matthew Evans, an old-time, folk musician in the Chattanooga area. I play clawhammer banjo, minstrel banjo, flatpick and fingerstyle guitar, old-time fiddle, mandolin, and the bones. I also give private music lessons for any of these instruments/styles. I have learned directly from Bob Townsend and Tim Worman, and indirectly from Norman Blake, Dave Van Ronk, Dwight Diller, and Bruce Greene. Except for Tim, all these musicians have recordings that are available, though in most cases not in the ride-down-to-your-local-record-store-and-find-them-kind-of way. Please contact me if you'd like information about finding them.
In addition to inspiring me, one afternoon in a Marine Corps barracks in San Diego, to finally pursue that desire to play music, my brother Thomas is also a musician and songwriter. Check his stuff out under Crow Flies.
Every music collection should begin with the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music. In addition to the "learned from" list above, I would also recommend the following old-time/folk artists/recordings: Holy Modal Rounders, Bruce Molsky, American Fiddle Tunes (Smithsonian/Rounder collection)...
Less-than-strictly to not traditional music: Gillian Welch, William Elliott Whitmore...
