About Olivers Army: The Elvis Costello Tribute Band
Oliver's Army started out as an idea when Dallas bassist and high school English teacher Michael Alves bought a CD of other musicians performing Elvis Costello songs. Alves thought, "I'm a big Elvis Costello fan. Why don't I start an Elvis Costello tribute band?" In July 2001, Alves placed a musicians-wanted ad searching for like-minded players. The first to join up was Arlington resident Russell Bartholomee. Bartholomee, an eight-year veteran middle school history teacher in Mansfield, had sung in several bands during college in Abilene. He was so excited about the opportunity to perform Costello's music that he sang the first lines to "Alison" into Alves's answering machine as an audition. He would soon assume the commanding officer role of lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Next to join was guitarist and vocalist Joe Schwartzott, who moved to Dallas from Buffalo, New York, had played guitar in the band Schwa. Currently, he is also serving as MC/percussionist for Bakin Roos and drummer for Gentlemen Losers. Floridian turned Texan Chris Stillo enlisted on keyboards. After having served in bands in both states, Stillo enjoys taking the front-line position of keyboards so often heard in Elvis Costello's music. Alves drafted Denton-based drummer Steve Hill into Oliver's Army. Hill, originally from River Falls, Wisconsin, had served with Alves in 12LB.TEST and Mudville Nine. Steve served valiantly until January 2003. He was given an honorable discharge and now serves with The Baptist Generals. Oliver's Army thanks Steve Hill for his service to the band. Good luck Steve! You Rock! Mark Pittman took up the roll of drummer after Hill. Pittman, a high school buddy of Schwartzott, also played in Schwa. All are happy to have him in the Army. Oliver's Army played its first gig at a Club Dada open mike night. They were soon asked to return to that stage and hope to enjoy a steady schedule of bringing Elvis Costello's music to the masses.
