Olivia
“There’s irony in my veins,” croons singer-songwriter Olivia D’Abo on the opening track of her ethereal opus, "Not TV".
In some ways, she resembles Tori Amos or PJ Harvey in her chameleon-like ability to reveal the many colors of being a woman. But her music owes just as much to Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. At turns gleefully melodic and positively grounded, the one constant-aside from fidelity to her characters-is that voice. Raspy and mellifluous in a single breath, the evocative lifts and dips make for a truly unique and lingering sound.
To many of her fans, she will always be Karen Arnold, the wraithlike, fiercely independent older sister on the groundbreaking television series, The Wonder Years. Her work on that show earned her critical acclaim and a generation of devoted admirers. What followed has been a career peppered with memorable roles on screen and a recent popular run in Broadway’s The Odd Couple. For those primarily familiar with her acting work, rest assured, songwriting is hardly a second wind. Born into a prominent musical family in England, she grew up accustomed to Sir Elton John, Dusty Springfield and Cat Stevens popping by for dinner to strum tunes on the family guitar. Her own career includes recording duets with Jon Bon Jovi and Seal, as well as composing songs for film and contemporary artists. With a pedigree like that, she can count on music to be the wind at her sails, steering her passage to newer, stranger worlds.
We have a review in the November issue of Baby Sue:
Olivia D'Abo - Not TV (Independently released CD, Pop)
Because we aren't hooked into the world of cable television (thank God), this young lady's name did not register with us. But more informed folks out there in the universe will instantly know Olivia D'Abo as the character Karen Arnold on the television show The Wonder Years. For others her last name may be obviously familiar, seeing as how her father is Mike D'Abo, lead single in the band Manfred Mann. Considering the fact that she is the child of a celebrity and is also an actress, one would expect Olivia's music would...suck. But all honesty we say nay, nay, nay...this music by no means sucks at all. Not even slightly. In fact, Not TV is a beautifully written and well-recorded body of work. D'Abo writes smart, serious. reflective soft pop tunes that are accessible and yet not overtly commercial sounding. She has a super smooth warm and inviting voice that really makes her tunes kick. This young lady proves that not everyone can be pigeonholed just because of their own individual circumstances. Not TV is a total success, featuring cool tunes like "Undertow," "Ne'er Do Well," "Addicted," and "Catastrophe." (Rating: 5)
Merry Christmas.Peace, light and love for 2010.Your brazilian lion friend, Mau.
"As the days pass by, I am more convinced that the waste of life, is in the love that we don' t give, in the strenght that we don't use, in the selfish prudence that nothing risked and dodging suffering, we also miss the hapiness". C.D.A.
Hey there, Olivia, have you ever heard , "Prelude 12/21" by AFI?
I first heard it last year and then found this video themed to one of my favorite shows. Much like your music, it has a sound that sticks. I thought as a music purist, you might appreciate it.
Hi, Olivia, I left your page here after I spotted a page devoted to your acting.
It turned out to be some fan page with no connection to you what-so-ever.
I really like your work though, so I wanted to stick around here, and follow where your career takes ya whether it's through Music, Television, or the Movies. = )
Hi Olivia. Revolution is very very good. Congratulations!!!!!!! My name is Charles Galvani and I have a group here in Brazil. I know that we have the problem of the language, but when you can, listen our songs. Sucess!!! Charles Galvani. Your city is very good. I was there last year.
HEY! How are you doing? Its been awhile since I've spent much time on the site. Time to do some catching up with everyone. Summer was pretty hectic. I'm in the middle of recording. Hopefully we get it mostly done by mid January. In the meantime I just put up a jam track called 2009. Have a listen! Drop us a message sometime. Take Care, Nikko
