Omar Henry (born February 8, 1987) in Chicago, Illinois is an American professional boxer of Puerto Rican and African American descent currently residing in Houston, Tx.
Omar's amateur record is 60-5. He was a silver medalist in the China vs. USOEC Competition which took place on October 23, 2007. He was also member of the USA Boxing Elite Boxing Program In Marquette Michigan. Omar was a quarter finalist at the 2007 National Golden Gloves as well as a 4-time Texas Golden Gloves champion and 2-time Texas Us Championships champion (Voted Outstanding Boxer 2007).
Omar is signed with the Las Vegas-based promotional company Top Rank Boxing and is managed by 2007 Boxing Writers of America Manager of the Year Award winner Cameron Dunkin. Dunkin wrote that " He’s a tremendous puncher and he looks like a one-punch knockout artist. But he can box, also. He’s got great speed and strength. He really does a little bit of everything. But right now he’s just hammering people out of there." Just a wonderful kid," he says." So well-spoken and so smart and clean. I was just talking to Jay Johns about him today, just such a pleasure to be around, he’s fun to be around. Just a good, good guy for everybody and a tremendous talent."
Omar won his professional debut on July 18, 2008, at the Reliant Arena in Houston Texas, against Terence Anderson knocking him out in 1:15 of the first round. Many on www.youtube.com have compared his style with another Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto.
Omar has gone to win his next 4 out of 5 bouts by 1st round knockout. Top ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael named Omar one of his top favorite prospects to keep an eye on, which is considered unprecedented for a fighter with only 5 fights into his pro career, without going to the Olympics as an amateur.
His performances, and his apparent "cloning" of the style of Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto, were enough to earn him an invitation to become the chief sparring partner for the #1 pound for pound boxer Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao's team according to conditioning coach Alex Ariza,Omar is very much like Cotto. He moves like Cotto. He looks like Cotto. He’s got the same hair as Cotto. He wants to be like Cotto. Omar, although grateful for the opportunity and the recognition, respectfully declined the invitation. Omar's college education has taken precedence over everything else.
