"I wasn't really known for anything in life. But I feel like now I should be known", Kadeem "Dat Dude" Cobham once said. His story goes back just a few years ago when a Northern kid found his knack for Beatmaking in the South.
On February 11, 1991 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Kadeem Cobham was born. Music has been apart of his life for years. He grew up in a young where Michael Bolton, Sting, The Eurythmics, Guns N Roses, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Gregory Issacs, Buju Banton, Toni Braxton, Big L, Wu-Tang, Beres Hammon, Buju Banton, Rick James, Luther Vandross, Tribe Called Quest and Barry White would play at the same time. He began showing his love for music by gaining a beatboxing skill at the age of 2 and by later taking up the drums and even being in his church choir.
But what Kadeem loved was beats. He payed more attention to the instrumental to a song than the lyrics itself. If the beat wasn't good, the song wasn't good. He also used his beatboxing skills to do the beat to any song that was playing.
At 14, Kadeem began his dream of becoming a producer simply by thinking of a name. His names ranged from: K-Blaze, Younggame, NexDiddy, Gamebeatzz, and many others too embaressing to name. He began using a production software called Trackion 2 which at the time was confusing and overall bad. Then one day the perfect name hit him. Kadeem was really knwon for being the tall, cute, black kid or Vicky's Brother. Hardly anyone knew his name so he decided simply on, "Dat Dude".
In January 2007, Dat Dude and his family moved from the cold, violent city of Springfield and down to warm and boring Palm Bay, Florida. There Dat Dude met a rapper named Young Ghost, who happened to live around the corner from Dat Dude and, to him, being one of the tightest rappers he's met so far. Dat Dude began his grind again on making beats, taking inspiration from anything to anything. He still used Trackion 2, but then found out about Fruity Loops; which when he started using it was confusing.
Then one rainy June afternoon where there wasn't anything to do or no place to go, Dat Dude started messing around with the software and made a solid, repetitive beat. Soon after, by using obvious FL sounds he made beats everyday that summer, struggling to better his skills. By that August when school started again. The 11th grader made music a priority by bettering himself and even starting up a myspace page. He put up a few projects, they got a few plays, and everything was going solid from there. Unfortunatley, not every one else was thinking the same
Not alot of good feedback came from his beats because, well, they sucked. But it didn't knock his hustle to get better. So after having his myspace page get deleted he made a new one and worked from there. His momentum on making beats was real slow. Sometimes he wouldn't make any weeks and the myspace page wasn't getting no exposure. Some days without comments or even plays discourgared the 17 year-old. But it all changed up one summer.
After his computer crashed for about a month, Dat Dude was in a slump and trying to figure how he can get back on his feet when all of his previous beat files and VST's were deleted. But after getting a brand new hard drive, the first thing Dat Dude did was download anytime of production and recording software he could get. During that summer, with no job and no car, Dat Dude spent everyday making better beats and boasting his myspace worldwide. People from England, France, and even Japan gave him props on his music as he got even better and better.
Over that summer he met Sgt. Rock, a producer from Texas, who helped Dat Dude craft his beats and even went ahead and had me on his roster for his indie label, Bangin' Hitz Inc.. Dat Dude now grinds every morning at 6:45 a.m. making sure thath is myspace is getting heard. He is constantly networking and making a name for himself, talking to dozens of A&Rs and many people who have strong ties to the industry and with the positive feedback he gets everyday on his producing skills, Dat Dude has finally found something he can be known for.
