JUAN CARLOS BLANCO was born and raised in Havana, Cuba, where he danced professionally for over 15 years before coming to the United States in 1997.
He spent 9 years dancing with one of Cuba's most respected folkloric companies Raices Profundas ("deep roots”) as lead male dancer and soloist. Mr. Blanco toured Asia, Central and South America with Raices Profundas. He drummed and taught Afro-Cuban dance for Ban Rra Rra, a Cuban folkloric company that celebrates the Haitian culture. He danced, choreographed and acted with Arte Popular, a theatre company directed by Tito Junco and danced with modern dance company Alabama. While in Cuba, Mr. Blanco taught Afro-Cuban dance at the Escuela Nacional de Arte and the Instituto Superior de Arte of Havana.
Since coming to the U.S., Mr. Blanco has been featured in various Afro-Cuban productions through out the country as dancer and guest choreographer. He founded his own Afro-Cuban company, Omo Ache, in 1998. Omo Ache performs regurlarly in schools, universities, and multi-cultural venues through out the California region.
Mr. Blanco has been teaching Afro-Cuban dance and percussion to the public in the U.S. through private studios, community centers as well as residencies at elementary schools, middle schools, universities, and colleges.
Performances, residencies, workshops, in-services and choreographic consultations are available upon request.
